Kiwi car buyers take a different route to rest of world

5:33 PM Tuesday Mar 11, 2014 The Toyota Corolla was New Zealand's top selling passenger vehicle last year.
The Toyota Corolla was New Zealand's top selling passenger vehicle last year.
New car buyers here are taking a different route to the rest of the world when it comes to their choice of vehicle, the Motor Trade Association says.

Comparing New Zealand's 10 best-selling vehicles last year against the top 10 worldwide highlighted how lifestyle needs dictated the type of vehicle bought, MTA spokesman Ian Stronach said.

Toyota's Corolla topped the charts locally, as well as the world overall - one of the few instances where local buying patterns showed any alignment with global trends.

But buyers here showed a strong preference for practical, multi-task type vehicles, while the rest of the world tended more towards smaller and mid-sized four cylinder vehicles.

With New Zealanders regularly transporting things like pets, mountain bikes, firewood and boats, vehicles here were often required to be capable of many roles, Mr Stronach said.

"It's not surprising our buyer preferences vary so much from major worldwide trends. Cars tend to be more of a focus in the lives and lifestyles of New Zealanders than in other parts of the world, where they are sometimes regarded solely as an urban transportation solution.''

New Zealand's 'Top 10' featured two sport utility vehicles (SUVs), four utilities and just four standard passenger vehicles. Worldwide, it was a much different picture, with eight passenger cars and just one SUV and one utility.

"If what we drive says anything about us, it might be that we place a priority on functionality and flexibility; we like our vehicles to be capable of more than one task, and we don't follow every trend that originates offshore,'' Mr Stronach said.

Expected to see both Toyota Corollas and Camrys in the list for NZ and the world which I do, however, strange not to see Honda Civics and Accords in them, thought these two models are very much sought after. I have the 2.4 litre hybrid Accord in my "wished for" list now.

Cheers!

There are plenty of camrys and accords. However, they are in less demand than the UTEs. Toyota Corolla is number one because the old folks are very loyal buyers.

Corolla is very good value for the price - except in Peesai. Walking around my condo's premises, BMWs and Volvos outnumber the other makes.

Cheers!

Only sales people who have to drive from town to town clock high mileage. The average Kiwi drives 15,000 km per year or about 40km per day.

Across the ditch, the story of big cars and unsealed or badly maintained roads ring true.
But in the UK and NZ, I find it funny to see elephants driving tiny cars.

Also, it depends on where you are (urban vs country)

Don't know about NZ, but in North America, the age of the V8 musclecar died out with the Arab oil embargo of the 70s. Emerging from that were the Japanese cars, at that time led by the Datsun 100A. Things have changed and much improved since and although performance still sells (and to some extent size too), the bulk of the general public goes is pragmatic. That is why models like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord appeals to a much wider range of the market. You still get your flamboyant types going for Hummers and Corvettes, but is a small percentage in the mass market. North America is still the largest auto market, and I think the next is China. With the pollution a daily issue, we might see some movement in the electric car market.

Cheers!

thank you for the information sharing. it is very useful.
Surprising Korean car Hyundai is not popular there, not even in the top 10 list.

You're welcome. I don't think there is any big reason to doubt Korean technology or quality, but its market appeal is not up there yet and not a first choice consideration when one chooses a car. Perhaps Hyundai or Kia needs to lift its profile by taking part in a competition like F1, that will help its image.

Cheers!

Korean reliability is still suspect. I've spoken to a quite few CityCab and Comfort taxi drivers and they tell me that the Hyundai Sonata is infamous for its braking problems, with the car lurching suddenly forward in 'P' (with handbrake on) or backward in 'R' (footbrake on). Repeated feedback to the dealer has not elicited a solution to the problem. Many taxis have landed in ditches or smashed into walls at carparks because of this problem.

Sam is right. The most reliable cars in the world are the Japs, by a mile. Jap cars are designed right from the start with 2 things in mind: ease of servicing/maintenance, and reliability. Dollar for dollar, the Japs still make a better car than any European or North American auto company.

Hyundai need another 3-5 years to fix its steering.
The Hyundai i30 is one of Western Australia's top selling car.

But the No 1 is the HiLux. It is also NZ No 2 best selling "car"!

068924-cars12.jpg

WA'S best selling car isn't a car - it's a 4WD ute.

Toyota's Hilux 4WD ute thrashed popular small cars to take off the king of vehicles sales for April, selling 411 units in the month.

That trounced traditional top-selling passenger cars such as the state's most popular small car, the Hyundai i30 (279 sales in April), Toyota Corolla (with 207 sales) and the Mazda 3 (257 sales).

Hyundai is the state's top-selling brand in passenger cars but Toyota takes the top place when its commercial vehicles are factored in.

Toyota sold 2257 vehicles in WA in April. It was followed by Hyundai (1099), Mazda (670); Holden (667); Ford (618); Mitsubishi (471); Nissan (468); and Volkswagen (342).
