Need your views on this matter..

Have a colleague from Norway who would down an Aspirin tablet before sleep every night. He is healthy, not suffering from any heart disease or stroke but told me it's for years now he cultivated this habit of taking an Aspirin every night as a deterrent from any sudden heart attack..

My question is, can a person with no heart problems consume Aspirin? What are the side effects? It Aspirin really effective in suppressing heart attack or stroke?

Asprin helps to thin the blood and prevents cloting.

It is true. Do a google search. There are articles on this. One is from American Heart Association.

Thanks Ero.. Yes I did a search on the Internet about this.. Seems like many people without heart problems are also taking Aspirin as a precaution..

Well I guess a daily low dosage is ok. But better consult a doctor to be on the safe side and whether ok for you considering your medical or health condition (if any).

Also not advisable for those who drink regularly.

Thinning of blood is good as it allows better flow to corners that are hard to reach. A notable effect is that it will dry up cease, casing it to pop out like a large pimple. It can also make swollen lymph node to subside. However, it may also cause stroke if the vessels in the brain are hardened due to aging or other causes. These are personal experience, not professional advice.

Many thanks for sharing your personal experience.. Don't why.. Lately I have been having this terrible fear of having a heart attack due to my atrocious lifestyle and heavy work load.. I have been cutting down on my meat intake and eating more vegetables.. Also cutting down on the ciggies and beer..

A Norwegian colleague assigned with me to work in Malaysia told me of his habit of popping an Aspirin before bedtime.. In fact I'm seriously thinking of following his example by having an Aspirin before going to sleep.. Just taking a prevention.. Many healthy young chaps are dropping like flies due to heart problems..

if you have a stomach ulcer, avoid it.

Don't have any history of stomach ulcer.. Frankly speaking, lately I'm having some minor discomforts of the chest and feeling quite breathless at times.. Bought a small box of Aspirin yesterday before my flight back to S'pore for reunion dinner.. Took 2 tablets during the flight.. The discomforts on the chest and feeling of breathlessness disappeared after 3 hours..

Earlier during dinner, I avoided all chicken, duck meat.. Only ate the steamed Garoupa.. Also avoided the beer and liquor.. Only drank chrysanthemum tea.. Later will pop an Aspirin again before sleep..

One chap also recommended me this traditional herbs to be boiled and drink every morning and night.. He will only give it to me when I'm back for work at Malaysia next week as he had to go to his kampung to collect it..

I also bought a rosella hibiscus tea packet.. Many people said it's good for the heart.. KNN I'm only in my 30s and yet I have this fear of heart attack..

Jah, me 1.74 m , height 65 kg.. But I got a small beer belly.. :p

Maybe the years of hard smoking and toiling under the hot sun during job projects finally beginning to take its toll on me.. And add to the fact the cheap beers, food that I consumed during my overseas assignments..

Hardly exercised.. Tried to jog few months back, and suddenly experienced some bit of pain on my chest.. Went to the doctor and he said it was just a chest muscle strain..

I see. Perhaps you should cut down on your smoking and maybe alcohol consumption. I think working under the hot sun should be enough physical activity but you can try exercising more if you can afford to. Wear some sun screen when working under the sun.

I've been on low dose aspirin for the last 15 years. The only downside is that when you cut yourself, it takes a long time for the bleeding to stop.

Same applies if you have a nose bleed or internal bleeding for some reason. It results in more blood loss.

If your arteries are clogged with fatty deposits, aspirin is not going to make the slightest difference. You need proper medical intervention.

Thanks Boss for your advice.. I'm fearing the worse.. I have all the symptoms of someone with a heart problem.. Sudden breathlessness, fatigue, at times feeling nauseous, irregular chest pains..

Don't know if its my old anxiety disorder creeping up again but since I'm back in Singapore for the CNY, I will see my company doctor one of this days..

If you're a hypochondriac, anxiety alone can bring on all the symptoms you mention.

A simple series of tests will determine the state of your heart.

My test is simple. If I can climb the 6km 7% gradient hill which I use for cycling training within my usual time limit, I figure my heart is good for another day or so.

Whatever the outcome of your tests, if you don't change your lifestyle and get at least 30 minutes of vigorous exercise daily, it's a matter of time before your current anxiety becomes reality.

I'm off now for a 90 minute bike ride. Talk to you later.
