If not for alternative media, would we still know Little India Riot?

Confuseous

Soon after, the mainstream media started carrying news of this riot.

This is one reason why it is unreasonable for the Government and the mainstream media (through its commentaries and forum letters), to constantly berate the alternative media for propagating lies, half-truths and misinformation.

Of course some were asking questions like if it is true that policemen had died in the riot on social media - questions which could raise the anxiety-level of the public over the incident. But people were asking such questions only because there was apparently no timely announcement by the Government and the mainstream media to provide more accurate information on the riot.

A near-riot involving 200 hostile mob and 4 policemen reportedly happened in 2008 (link: Red light area gets out of line). The story was been given a wide berth by the mainstream papers and only emerged as a result of a district court sentencing report in the year 2010.

One can only wonder if the mainstream media would have conveniently given the Little India Riot a wide berth as well had it not been for the social media and the bloggers.

You also have to thank those eye witnesses (some of them the Ah Neh rioters themselves) who had recorded all that wonderful footage of the riot in its full glory.

It would have been much easier for the powers that be to cover up or play down such an event without social media, camera phones or the Internet.

Praise be to technology.

not all the workers were involved in the riot

in fact some were trying to discourage their fellow workers from causing damages

they knew the consequences

but it is a lesson for all

fortunately no firearms were used...it was a blessing indeed

I would have preferred some shots to be fired. It would have made the whole episode a lot more exciting and dramatic and a whole lot more newsworthy on the international stage.

yeah...............a few cops kana shot would have been great..................really strike fear into those gutless worthless PAP ministers..............

in Singapore, social media is the same as Lehman crisis which expose the shit of PAP.

without Lehman crisis, Ho Ching was yaya and cheated us to believe that she is the best investor,
after lehman crisis? we know the real gure of HO Ching.

the same goes to social media as it highlights and exposes PAP wrong doings

Constrain, restrain...seeing "see how they run"...( the song from The Beatles ring in the ears), a very bad PR for the SPF not in the eyes of the people of SINgapore, to all the foreign workers & to the entire world who can watch YOUTUBE..no fire arms was used, ok it is A BLESSINGS that it was not necessary..grabbing poles or whatever to beat the rowdy crowds would be a BLESSINGS also...

My take of the what would have caused then a major incident at the messy place at Hamsphire Rd/Race Course Rd in any normal Sunday night, crowded with workers jostling, rushing & jaywalking, plus the many buses waiting to pick up & move off would be , THE MOUTH.

There are AETOS patrolling that area, they maybe Malaysian's Indians( why Malaysian? not to condemn them go find out)...all you need is for one Indian to bad mouth another in Tamil or Malayam or any other sub dialects , one is drunk, the other over exuberant in handling them...can be a spark to light a already simmering fire that had been lighted for a very long time..all you need is to pour "kerosene"...you get a "bonfire".

An ah neh...intoxicated will spew vulgarities that would make any of their own countrymen of any Nationality, blood boil...it is the MOUTH, that started the riot!!:p

Back then there were riots (smaller scale) in little India when Skihs clashed with Indians after Indira Gandhi's assassination. They were covered up without even a minor mention in MSM.
There were also big clashes between rival nationalities of foreign workers also covered up.
All these machiam Tiananmen Square incident in china where most Chinese never heard of 6/4 incident in their lives.

Judging from the way a panicky Fire Engine Driver can collide into a police car, any shots fired by SPF would result in this headline news; POLICEMEN killed by friendly fire in Little India Riot.

" Crows accidentally shot at in Little India, SINgapore", would be the headline, policeman in Little India atteding to a commotion accidentally discharged his firearm & shot a crow, which dropped off the tree. AVA is investigating the shooting of a wildlife & will issue a report & recommendation soon.
