The current debate over jobs – who should these go to – stems from some murky and dubious claims by different sides. Let’s take a look at two simple issues – how many jobs have gone to Singaporeans and foreigners; and what kinds of jobs these are.

Ten years ago, in 2003, three economists from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), released a report which said that “three out of four new jobs in Singapore were taken up by foreigners in the last five years.” (See here.)

The three were former National Wages Council chairman, Professor Lim Chong Yah, Dr Tan Khee Giap and Dr Chen Kang.

“Out of four jobs created, only one job went to a Singapore resident, three jobs went to the intake of foreign workers,” Professor Lim the NTU’s Nanyang Business School said then.

The NTU report drew a sharp response from the then Acting Minister for Manpower, Ng Eng Hen, who said that the academics were “way off the mark”.

“If your figures are wrong, it is irresponsible, unprofessional to put out those figures. In this particular case, the NTU report, their findings are way off the mark. I do not know how they got their figures and what their methods are,” said Dr Ng.

He described the claims by the NTU economists “sensationalistic”.

Dr Ng said that in fact “nine in 10 new jobs” had gone to Singaporeans and residents, and “only one went to a foreigner.”

Before Sinkies ask the question "Where are the good jobs, Prime Ministar?", they should look at themselves in the mirror and answer the following questions honestly:

Was I born into the elite class?
Is my family related to Old Fart, Tricky Tan, Gecko?

They are "in his office".
One of them is held by the clown who likes to dress up as zorro and talks about premium toothpicks.

I know of a pinoy EP. Works in a foreign offshore bank. Earned $125000 pa. IT trained.

Now u know where those good jobs go to....

what's a good job for locals? anything that pays $50k-100k?

Don't forget about those jobs paying millions with perks like unlimited healthcare, pension, allowances,... Without a retirement age. Lets get real, why should a 90 year old invalid still be paid by taxpayers money:confused:

Sinkies are ball-less and therefore you do any deserve any good jobs.

Faster run road ah.

Since 1 July 2013, the CPF Minimum Sum (MS) has been increased from $139,000 to $148,000. The MS will be adjusted every July for inflation and will be raised gradually until it reaches $120,000 (in 2003 dollars) in 2015.

The Minimum Sum DDA will be raised gradually from 62 to 65 and members born in 1950 and after are affected. Please refer to the table below for your applicable DDA.

So what are you waiting for? 2016? You ball-less sinkie.

I tend to agree with the economists. We have about 100k foreigners every year and I would assume the majority have a job or serious offer before coming here.

Our local university graduates are only numbered in the 10 to 20k, so you do the math.

In addition, Ng Eng Heng said that 9 in 10 of the jobs goes to Citizens and Residences. How many goes to Residences? It is so misleading....

So if 100k foreigners to 20k graduates (I am even assuming they are all locals), then the 1 out of 4 is correct. Simple maths

This Dr Ng is trying to smoke us. 9 out of 10 new jobs went to Singaporeans, while 1 went to foreigners. Yet since 2000, they brought in 2 million foreigners, so even if only half of them are working, we get a figure of 1 million, whereas 9 million jobs will go to Singaporeans. And there are only 3 million Singaporeans, u believe him?

we don't use pensions anymore.

Civil servants in the elite Administrative Service and in judicial and key statutory appointments will no longer receive pensions, according to Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean in Parliament Monday.

Teo’s answer was in response to a question by Tampines GRC MP Mr Baey Yam Keng on the completion of the review of salaries of such civil servants by the Public Service Division. The Administrative Service covers 15 ministries and nine organs of state.

There's a damn good reason why they lumped the blue cards together with the pink cards when computing national statistics. ;)

isnt that an elegant solution to the problem? sure it fudges the numbers - but to what end?
