Exactly, big bro GD. The Old Fart is a peranakan who speaks no dialects and only patois malay and so found learning mandarin extremely difficult. He erroneously thought that speaking dialect would stifle learning mandarin when in fact, it would much more easier to do so because of the many similarities. So because of one man's mistaken belief, dialects have been all but eradicted and there goes the rich culture and traditions of the various dialect groups, plus a disconnect between the old and the young chinese. And up till today, he refuses to acknowledge this mistake. That's the kind of character the Old Fart is.
