It looks like an aircraft carrier, it sounds like an aircraft carrier... but the Japanese are adamant their biggest ship since WW2 is a 'flat-topped destroyer'

Japan has been accused of ignoring its policy of self-defence after launching its largest warship since the end of the Second World War as the government faces down China over a disputed chain of islands.

The new ship is designed to carry up to 14 helicopters at once - but Japanese officials insist it is not an aircraft carrier and will not be used to launch military jets.

The 250m vessel, named 'Izumo', is officially labelled a destroyer, although it has a flat top which functions as a flight deck like that on an aircraft carrier. Its 'Peace Constitution' , which was designed by Allied leaders, followed Japan's involvement in the Second World War which included the devastating attack on US naval base Pearl Harbour in 1941.

This eventually led to the U.S. dropping a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima in 1945, which brought about Japan's surrender and the end of the war in 1945.

Officials say the new ship will be used to defend Japan and deliver personnel and supplies to areas hit by natural disasters, such as the devastating 2011 earthquake.Japan's conservative prime minister Shinzo Abe is keen to change the constitution to allow the country to maintain a standing army for the first time in seven decades.

The unveiling of the new destroyer - which has been under development since 2009 - also coincides with a dispute between Japan and China over a chain of tiny islands in the South China Sea.

The two countries conduct regular patrols of the waters around the islands, which are called the Senkakus in Japan and the Diaoyus in China.

The country is officially banned from all military actions apart from self-defence and humanitarian aid under the terms of the constitution imposed on it by the U.S. after the Second World War.China reacted with alarm to the news of Izumo's launch and accused the Japanese government of aggressive intent towards other countries.

'We express our concern at Japan's constant expansion of its military equipment,' a spokesman for China's defence ministry told AFP. 'This trend is worthy of high vigilance by Japan's Asian neighbours and the international community.

'Japan should learn from history, adhere to its policy of self-defence and abide by its promise of taking the road of peaceful development.'

Japan is waiting for this plane to fill their carrier.

singapore should build an destroyer or cruiser but call it a gunboat too. so not to escalate arm race with malaysia.

Father collaborated with the Japanese ...now the son gets the same opportunity. Isn't that wonderful news for the Lees?

China forced them, and many other asian nations to rearm especially in naval equipment.

I agree, China is the cause of this arms race..and its just a helicopter carrier, not very well armed. No jump ramps and no arrestor cables. At most can put in 12 or 14 harrier jumpjets...and no ramp so the endurance of the VTOLS will be limited. what can 14 fighters do against China??? It will be used more for humanitarian purposes.

There's no need for aircraft carriers if the war is with china only. Japan is close enough for fighters jets to reach the coastal cities. Air to air refueling would be a cheaper and more secure method to project Japanese jets into china inner cities.

That is why i feel it will be used for more humanitarian purposes as it can move a huge amount of supplies etc to another country like if there is another Tsunami, earthquake etc..but I also feel the carrier will also be more defensive in nature like submarine hunters and and so on. Korea also has one... Just my rants...

The whole equation changes when Japan deploy VTOL F35. It firepower will exceed most AC in service today other than those from USN. It make this carrier more than just helicopter carrier but an offensive platform.

I suspect this is just Japan's way of provoking china, hoping that china reacts strongly and then Japan can legitimately reverse its pacifist policy.

You don't need such a ship design for humanitarian missions. Neither is this good for sub hunting. But this design is good to stir shit in china.

You are fighting last century's war. Nowadays air war is about drones and missiles. Why fly a manned aluminum can into hostile territory just to drop bombs?

Its good as sub hunters due to the helicopters. helicopters are the 2nd best anti sub weapon. The 1st is another submarine.

Such a big target is sweet meat for subs. With so much assets on board a single vessel is asking for trouble. Better to deploy smaller ships with drone helicopters.

Japan can make a nuclear bomb and say that it uses it for energy purposes...

Japan is so cool...

oh yes, last but not least, i know there is one sinkie who is still trying to use a starhub line in japan..

The problem is the F35 has soo much problems..Dont even know if it can fulfill what it is designed to do. This carrier might also become a white elephant..

U have a good point...but if its for humanitarian purposes than sinking it by china will make the chinese look bad...or worse...

just 1 point...Drones are becoming more popular,,,but what if the other side hacks it? than the drones can turn against them...

Unlike other helicopter amphibious assault vessels, this one doesn't carry any landing craft. Space was save for under deck hangar. It a mini aircraft carrier.

Japan probably wouldn't need this carrier if she is thinking about striking inland china. It not even needed in those disputed islands with China, S.Korea and russia as land based aircraft would be sufficient. The only thing I can think of is about projecting her power way beyond her shores.
