NTUC First campus: Compassionate or Opportunistic?

"SINGAPORE - NTUC First Campus will cover all the medical expenses of the 3-year-old boy who was injured after his 51-year-old childcare teacher allegedly dragged him across the floor and pushed him onto the ground, causing him to fracture his shin.


The incident was caught on closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV), with the footage showing the teacher slamming a child repeatedly onto the ground at a Toa Payoh childcare centre, My First Skool, which is run by NTUC First Campus.

The teacher was arrested by the police on Sunday. Investigations are ongoing.

On Friday morning, 5 July, a child at My First Skool at Toa Payoh Blk 192 sustained an injury to his leg. It was caused by mishandling by his teacher. The parents were informed of the injury at about 11.40am. The child was brought to the clinic and subsequently the KK Women's and Children's Hospital by the teacher and centre principal. The mother brought the child home that afternoon.

On Saturday, 6 July, the parents made a police report. They viewed the CCTV video that afternoon and parts of the video have been put online. There has since been press coverage and much discussion online.

I watched the video last night and was very disturbed and saddened. The teacher's conduct was totally unacceptable and my heart goes out to the child and his parents. Whatever the circumstances, such behaviour cannot be condoned. I am truly sorry that this had happened.

We had placed the teacher on immediate suspension. The due process is underway and we will not hesitate to take the appropriate action for wrongdoings. I will personally see to a swift and fair conclusion to the investigation."

The eligibility criteria for the scheme have been reviewed to allow more potential operators to be considered. With the revised criteria, all interested pre-school operators that meet the eligibility criteria can submit proposals. The key eligibility criteria are:

• The Proposer must be a current operator of child care centres and/or kindergartens, with at least 10 centres or providing 1,000 pre-school places, and have a good track record of providing quality early childhood services.

• The Proposer must demonstrate strong regulatory compliance and governance, including having or establishing an independent governing body.

• The Proposer must be legally and financially liable for all operations under the Anchor Operator scheme.

• To ensure financial stability and sustainability, the Proposer must be prepared to provide and maintain a financial guarantee equivalent to 6 months of operating costs, or $10m, whichever is lower.

In their mind, they think that in pursuing the case, sinkies are only interested in getting compensation. Health problems arising from haze, govt pay outpatient. Long term implications? This sort of "wayang competition" has been going on for quite some time.
We saw on the same shelf selling the same genuine brand and also NTUC in-house brand next to it.
On closer comparison, both seems to be of similar or almost the same products.
Hence on one hand NTUC earns your $$$ to have your item placed on their shelf, with the other hand compete it against yours.
