Back then, there were many arcade video game shops in every corner of the town centre.
Business was good especially after school and during weekends as there wasn't much entertainment in Sillypore.
However, the Sillypore gahbrament envy about this business model, they gradually banned most of the video game shops from operating but only allows NTUC resort and some of those country club and SAFRA club to operate without hassel. The business died eventually even when online games and LAN Game cafe was not popular at that time.
Many video game arcades have closed down due to exorbitant rent. You can still find some of them in malls, and there is a rather new one at Bugis+ (formerly Iluma). They're also competing with LAN gaming shops/cybercafes for retail space. Finally, game arcades' businesses have also been eroded by computer/console gaming.
Still, some games are better played in game arcades. Fighting games and driving games (with a rocking driver's seat and steering wheel).
Once upon a time, back in the early-mid 1980s, there were fun fairs set up on open grounds, and there would be a section with arcade game machines. The fun fairs were fun... there were roller coaster rides, a ferris wheel, bumper cars etc. Now, many of those fields have been used to build more HDB flats, condos and malls. Progress? I don't think so.
