Even if the car breakdown, shouldn't the driver push it to a spot whereby it won't obstruct traffic??

Isn't there some way for automatic transmission car drivers to move a stalled car to the side of the road without obstructing traffic

yes, there is a manual brake release which allow you to push the car when engine not running. think the driver donno how to use it.

very common practice in los where there are not enough parking lots. you can park your car perpendicularly infront of another car and set to manual brake release. when the car behind want to get out, the driver just push the car in front so his/her car can get out.

also common in nightspot.

my civic uses the key to release the brake whereas my vios is just a button. hybrid i forgot already.

Now that you mentioned, I remember similiar parking arrangement when I was in Bangkok.

My old toyota corona had a red button just below the gear lever. I found what that button was when my car stalled on the road one day. I put it into Park and tried to restart the engine but the ignition was dead. Then I found that I could not change gear to Neutral, and spent a lot of time trying to figure it out. Finally I pushed the red button, and voila, I could change the gear to neutral, and then easily push the car to the side.

Found a youtube video that describes the process (the button may be different for various cars):

thank for the video.
i think for toyota..is to use the key insert into the {shift lock release} hole and shift to neutral?

Nonsense!

Look at your Auto gear shift.. There is a "N" there right?? .. That is NEUTRAL. Set it there and push the car... Gear linkage is decoupled from engine.. There is NO damage..

Auto transmission vehicle cannot be push. Will damage the gearbox.

I did not hear or see any cursing and do not know why that fellow "parked" there but i sure like hands-on approach of the public :).

hope the public will take hand-on approach when 2016 comes round

for some cars, you need to insert key into hole next to shift panel to release shift lock. this is to allow automatic transmission cars to be manually shifted to neutral for moving or towing. for some newer cars with electronic keys, there's no keyhole for shift lock release. you need to insert electronic key (there's a slot on dashboard near steering wheel), step on the brake pedal before you can release shift handle to neutral.

Passers-by moved car that was parked badly

Passers-by who were not pleased by how an inconsiderate driver parked his car on a two-lane road came together to put things right.

According to Lianhe Wanbao, the car had been parked on a speed bump near the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall off Balestier Road, making it impossible for buses to pass through.

After seeing the situation, passers-by worked together to lift and push the car until it was shifted sufficiently to the side of the road, allowing two SBS Transit buses to pass through.

The incident happened around 2.45pm on May 24, Vesak Day.

Although there was a traffic jam, no one sounded their horns, The New Paper said.

The video was uploaded by 31-year-old property agent June Tan. It went viral after that.

In the video, onlookers were visibly amused by the passers-by's actions. Some of them clapped when the car was shifted.

There was no sign of the driver throughout the entire incident.

If u force the car to move, the transmission may be damaged! Anyway serve the driver right!

Re: Passers-by moved car that was parked badly

My word, it looks like there could be a slight shift in that typical sinkie establishment mentality.

Re: Passers-by moved car that was parked badly
