Dental assistant Tay Gek Ching, 46, has a lot to smile about – a steady job and two sons who have made it to university.

A third-generation Singaporean, whose grandfather came from China in the 1920s, she grew up in a kampung in Yishun and studied at the now-defunct Upper Thomson Secondary School.

Said Madam Tay, who describes herself as 100 per cent Singaporean: “I love that I never have to worry about my safety here. I was born here and have lived here all my life, and I think that’s what makes me Singaporean.”

PADI BOY: Mr Saw Eng Hock worked in the padi fields when he was young. TNP PICTURE: GAVIN FOO

A punctured tyre almost reduced him to tears.

But it wasn’t because of the bad experience. Mr Saw Eng Hock said: “I was so overwhelmed and almost cried because two men, without any hesitation, changed the tyre for me.”

After realising that he had a flat tyre, the 63-year-old part-time swimming coach stopped his car and was about to change it when two men, who looked to be in their 20s, hopped out of a passing van to help him.

A grateful Mr Saw offered the kind Samaritans cash after they finished, but they politely declined.

He said: “I’m very fortunate to be a Singaporean. Not because of this single act of kindness – it’s because such acts happen all the time.”
