Third-generation S'porean has a lot to smile about

Dental assistant Tay Gek Ching, 46, has a lot to smile about – a steady job and two sons who have made it to university.
A third-generation Singaporean, whose grandfather came from China in the 1920s, she grew up in a kampung in Yishun and studied at the now-defunct Upper Thomson Secondary School.
Said Madam Tay, who describes herself as 100 per cent Singaporean: “I love that I never have to worry about my safety here. I was born here and have lived here all my life, and I think that’s what makes me Singaporean.”
