SINGAPORE — The Singaporean man alleged to have vandalised the Cenotaph war memorial at the Esplanade Park was charged in court today.
Mohd Khalid Mohd Yusop, 32, faces one count of vandalism and will be held in remand at the central police division to assist in investigations.
Under the Vandalism Act, Mohd Khalid faces a fine of up to S$2,000 or a maximum imprisonment term of up to three years. He can also be caned between three and eight strokes. The case will be mentioned again on May 6.
The case was first reported to the authorities last Wednesday, April 24, by a member of the public who saw that the monument had been spray-painted with the word “democracy” in red, and had the dates 1914 to 1918 had also been crossed out.
The Cenotaph, one of Singapore’s 64 national monuments, honours those who died in World Wars I and II.
The suspect was arrested by officers from Central Police Division at about 11.30am on Saturday at a building along Handy Road.
Among the items seized for investigation were a long-sleeved T-shirt, a pair of denim jeans, a pair of shoes, a tote bag, and a pair of headphones. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
