The death has been announced in London of the former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.

She was 87, and her spokesman said she had died peacefully following a stroke.

As Britain's first woman prime minister, Margaret Thatcher transformed the British political scene when she came to power in 1979.

She became perhaps the most influential and recognisable British leader of modern times on the international stage.

I'll remember Margaret Thatcher for one main reason. She changed Great Britain a lot by making it much less socialist than before, and she did a lot of privatisation. Singapore followed in Great Britain's footsteps and that in no small part landed us up in the shit we are today.

Social media was overflowing with people writing "Ding Dong!" in reference to the Wizard of Oz song, and posting pictures of themselves drinking in celebration of "Margaret Thatcher Death Day".

Hundreds of people took to the streets in Brixton, an area of south London which suffered serious rioting in the 1980s, to celebrate Lady Thatcher's death. Holding notices saying ‘‘Rejoice - Thatcher is dead’’, about 200 people gathered in the neighbourhood, a hotspot of alternative culture, and toasted her passing by drinking and dancing to hip-hop and reggae songs blaring from sound systems.
