You may think it is easy, but it is not so easy ok. The officer may know better but at the moment of throw, the recruit may panic or forget to do the correct procedure, resulting in an incident.

Years back at Pulau Tekong too, during the live grenade exercise, a recruit panicked and fumbled, and did not follow through the throw. It was short of the target. The OC happened to be at that particular station then and just managed to pull the recruit down but the grenade exploded, resulting in the OC substaining a sharpnel wound in the neck. He was in hospital for more than two weeks and when he returned to Company lines just before POP, we saw for ourselves how much weight he lost and the wound at his neck. It was lucky that this incident was not more serious, if not two lives could have been lost, just in a moment of fumbling.

This is not a laughing matter as depicted in cartoons like Popey the sailor man.:(

Years back, there was also a 2LT who knew how to react---http://www.mindef.gov.sg/imindef/resourcelibrary/cyberpioneer/topics/articles/people/2008/oct08_people.print.noimg.html

ever wonder white horse solider LHL ever thrown a grenade before or even fire a bullet?

Got la but bobo shooter....once in the 80s lhl went to Brunei sultan palace with daddy-O....sultan brought them to shooting range.....LKY shoot from hip position and hit target....lhl yaya took aim at target but missed.
Papers had to spin story to cover up this malu incident saying that rifle was not zeroed properly and lhl took aim at another much further target.

How did the recruit sustain injury to a single finger? Did he point his third finger at his lieutenant when he was trying to save his life?

Report says explodes in mid air...lousy reporting as usual.
Training grenades only pack 60-70% of the real thing....so maybe that's what saved their lives.
You guys mentioned a dummy target? Never had that in my time.

Then would have injured more than just a finger. Even with half power, his entire face and hand can get badly hurt.

I think the 2LT injured while hitting the ground, hence only injured the left shoulder.

Not sure if you guys remember this grenade incident few years back.. It was reported in the Shit Times then..

Quite a similar situation.. A Lt rescued a recruit during a grenade training.. The Lt was then given a medal for his bravery..

I think Second Lieutenant Kamalasivam will also be given some sort of a commendation in the coming months..

During my National Slavery days, an Officer died when the recruit dropped the hand grenade & the covered that with his helmet, saving the life of that recruit...we will always remember that officer...

I remember one of the grenade did not went off in the live exercise during my time. CSM was activated to detonate it. The whole company applauded him for successfully detonating it. :oIo::oIo::oIo:

I doubt he can rest in peace if he sees the influx of foreigners in SG now. What am i defending for? He must be thinking.....

If I recall correctly, back in 1985 or 1986, a hand grenade went off in the hand of a recruit during a live grenade throwing exercise in ITD. When I was doing my BMT at Tekong shortly after that incident, there was a exhibition by School of Military Medicine and one of the exhibit was a photograph of the hand injury suffered by the recruit. Gruesome with just the thumb left on the hand. Then there was another photograph showing the recruit with his hand bandaged, walking with the then Orientation Officer, Cpt Chai, in front of other recruits who have gathered at the swimming pool.

better to lobe it overhead, let the fuse run out in the air :biggrin::biggrin:

during vietnam war, american produced 'special grade' of hand grenade that explode immediately upon pulling of safety pin and left crates behind in some abandoned camps for vietcong to use

Mat whole body tattoo.. everyday walk around camp yayapapaya type. Officer neh disliked by most trainee.
Mat pull safety pin but accidentally released trigger & still holding on to it. Luckily Officer saw it shout at him to throw then pushed him down and use his whole body cover him. Grenade got 700 ball bearings inside dmg radius 15M . Officer back got hit but not very serious luckily.

Now trainees all say "Eh next time see Sir respect sial he risked his life to safe us"......:biggrin:

There is a target/s for grenade throwing, otherwise they won't know direction to aim and throw.
