More than 12 years ago, he was jailed for 15 years and given 18 strokes of the cane for raping his domestic helper. Given the usual reductions of sentence, he might well be out of prison already. If so, he should be asked to share his experiences in prison, as a warning to those tempted to do the same.

On her first day of work, he forced maid to strip. He molested her. Then, on Valentine's Day, he called his wife to say he'd raped the maid.
Shameless brute
He harassed her for four months and his wife knew about it but did nothing. He was sentenced to 15 years' jail and 18 strokes of the cane yesterday

HE TERRORISED the young Indonesian maid from the day she started work, forcing her to strip so that he could inspect her body.
Over the next four months, Loo Cheng Lip, 34, intimidated and harassed her for sex constantly.
When she resisted, he would grab her from behind, hold her and tell her he wanted sex.
She called her maid agency for help on two occasions and it informed his wife.
But no one came to her aid.
In the end, the oil company technician raped her on the marital bed of his flat in Choa Chu Kang.
Then, he called his wife at work to tell her he had just raped their maid, using an obscene four-letter word to describe the act.
The 26-year-old maid was a victim from day one, the High Court heard yesterday.
Immediately after taking her home from the maid agency, he demanded that she strip, saying it was a matter of procedure for him to check the naked bodies of his domestic maids before they started work.
When she refused, he complained to his wife.
But Madam Penny Goh thought he meant the maid would not "sweep".
She complained to the maid agency which in turn told the maid to follow her employer's instructions.
When the maid tried to explain to the agent what had really happened, Loo threatened her, so she kept quiet.
She later undressed in front of him out of fear.
Yesterday, Judicial Commissioner Tay Yong Kwang chided him for his "shamelessly cunning" behaviour and sentenced him to 15 years' jail and 18 strokes of the cane.
He pleaded guilty to raping his maid on February 14 and using criminal force during her four-month work stint with the family.
Although his defence counsel, Mr Parambir Singh Sekhon, said that Loo regretted hurting the maid and wished he could turn the clock back, JC Tay did not accept that he felt remorse.
"To aggravate the sorry situation, the accused here announced to his wife, with seeming nonchalance and arrogance, his sordid act by using the graphic four-letter word," he said.
"It was as if he felt a surge of masculine pride at having committed the offence."
The court heard Loo, who has a seven-year-old daughter and a six-year-old son, harassed the maid when no one else was home.
Unable to bear his sexual advances any longer, she called her agent secretly.
When the agent phoned Madam Goh to tell her about her husband's behaviour, she was silent.
Loo's father, who found out about his son's conduct, even persuaded the maid to forgive Loo.
She did.
But he did not stop.
Instead, he continued harassing her, leading to her worst nightmare on Valentine's Day this year.
While she was cleaning the flat, he grabbed her, forced her down onto a bed and raped her. She cried throughout the ordeal.
Later that day, she demanded that Loo confess his act to his wife.
He did, telling her a watered-down version of the truth, but she did nothing.
The next day, when no one was at home, the victim confided in another maid.
A report was filed at the Choa Chu Kang Neighbourhood Police Centre later that day.
The maid is now working in another household here.
