If WP is in power, the economy will collapse with resulting mass unemployment and riots by the poor.

If the PAP is still in power & does not sit down with all concern to address this problem, which is not new, it started way back in 1985 after the recession. There will be riots by those in middle or lower management, many of whom had already lost their jobs. ADD those who are already poor from the lower rung of education qualification, many of whom are from the baby boomers years & before.

The SME's have been made useless by becoming to dependent on CHEAP foreign labors to survive, you remove all these cheap source of labors, most of them will go bankrupt.

We cannot just shoot down any suggestion or proposals not only from the opposition, but also from the ruling party; consider the valid points raised, discard those are not feasible; come up with a National Master plan so that all SINgaporeans have a future.

I own part of an SME in Singapore. Singaporeans don't seem to realise that as a businessman, you are driven by $$$. That's why we run businesses instead of working for others. We do whatever it takes to maximise turnover.

If hiring becomes too difficult, I'll simply move somewhere else. It's that simple. If I do, 5 Singaporeans will lose their jobs.

I have heard this sung so many times over till it is ad nausem... I have helped a SME to get quota to employ FT's by working for one for many years...we do understand costs...the SINgapore workers are not stupid...we are not stupid.

The SME are a bunch of useless business that deserves to fail. Lack of innovation, using antiquated management and production methods, these firms have so much clout over the PAP (lots of the PAP MPs have business dealings with these SME) that the PAP government just comply with the demands of these small fries.
They were told 20 years ago to move up the value chain and modernized as low-wage labour will be phased out. They cried father and mother and the PAP government just kowtow. Now, we are in this mess because of the SME.
I wish that those exploited cheap foreign labour will go on strike and demand more.

I have worked through weekends, public holidays, that included Lunar New Year, all days, except for the eve of, I went home for a few hours for dinner & then off to work, Christmas...National day and so forth and I am SINgaporean. There many like me, who did this over the years & we were muscled out of our jobs, we adapt & move up the value chain.

I have even done what you did with a Macau based company doing graphics & computerization for the textile industry, many years ago, when it was still manually doing color matching...have worked through deadlines & countless hours at work...at the expense of family..even working away from SIngapore for a while..

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? insulting the hard working, responsible SINgapore workers....I have been in Industries from Banking/Finance to Manufacturing to IT & so forth...and had been on both sides from worker to management to running my own business..

There is one sinkie lady at the office who has the same dedication to work as you do. It is one of the reasons why we keep things going in Singapore. It would break my heart to have to retrench her.

However, I have to say that it is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain the effort. I have 3 FT designers who are working flat out and vacancies which are becoming harder to fill. It cannot continue like this forever. The WP policy would be the death knell of the business.

Pure BS. Heard of good corporate citizen? Our bunch of SME our sinkee killers ...they are a bunch of lazy pappies who have not innovated or change with the times. They are still relying on cheap labour to survive after the first warning was sounded 20 years ago! Where are the world class companies? And many of these companies receive grants from government ...grants that were to help them innovate, buy capital equipment, raise skill levels ...what did they do with the grants? Nobody knows as the PAP government does not place expectations on them and there is NO audit on how the grants were spent.

Let these SME die and new ones will come out.

Ask the thousands of SME why they need so many cheap labour - $5/hr? You are the exception rather than the rule. Maybe you are in the wrong biz? After all, there isn't much creativity in your field. There are thousands of East Europeans who deliver in your area cheaply and remotely.
