The following is the media statement in response to the Workers' Party's 'A Dynamic Population for a Sustainable Singapore'
"The Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (ASME) deems the Workers' Party's 'A Dynamic Population for a Sustainable Singapore' as another blow to the local SME community.
Already facing a severe manpower crunch from the government's drastic tightening of foreigners, SMEs have painfully learned to accept that there will be no U-turn in the policy only to now hear that the Workers' Party proposes an even more drastic deceleration.
The main prongs of the proposal relied heavily on increasing the Labour Force Participation Rate to 78.7%. This is easier said than done as there is an element of mismatch between available jobs and workers' expectations.
Again we find that similar to the government's foreign worker reduction policy changes, the Workers' Party has chosen not to address this very real problem and lumped foreign labour and foreign talent into one big basket.
The void in the workforce cannot be filled by Singapore PMEs who are wish for higher level, higher paying and higher comfort jobs.
The construction industry, the F&B industry and others in the service sector simply cannot recruit Singaporeans.
As these SMEs throw in the towel, Singapore PMEs will soon find the upward spiraling effect of less manpower to manage, less companies to serve, to audit and to provide financial services to.
This inevitably leads to reduction in PME jobs for the growing number of Singapore PMEs, and hence impacting the overall quality of living of Singaporeans.
ASME supports the view that the government should encourage resident workforce growth, however, not at the expense of simply cutting it down to zero foreign workforce growth.
Increasing resident workforce growth should complement a gradual tightening of the inflow of foreign workers. The tightening of inflow of foreign worker should be done progressively, together with more incentives and aid to help SMEs in the face of the current economic transition.
As seen with the recent abrupt changes in foreign worker reduction policy, this has already caused many SMEs to relocate or close down, causing a loss of income and jobs for Singaporeans as well.
With reference to Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Grace Fu's comments, ASME supports that there is still a need to allow SMEs to adjust and make the transition."
