Can the "Army" be sent in in the even of a "freak election"?

The Old Man did utter that statement - it was widely reported upon. When I read it in the Straits Time, it struck me he must really buy into his own propaganda that he is a deity in Singapore.

For a bigger dose of reality, just look at Egypt's Mubarak - he came from the military, gave all sorts of advantages to the military but at the end of the day, he was tossed to the wolves largely because they wanted to save their own skins.

Let me put it this way, what is going to stop that particular armed forces chief from looking at the Old Man, laughing loudly and then ordering another underling to take him, LHL and the whole Lee family into custody and then exchanging them to the incoming government for more rewards?

Gurkhas in Singapore are not part of the army. They are very small compared to the British

The way they are keeping the army leaders loyal is by giving them top corporate positions when they retire.

If the pap is defeated in the general elections, these same army leaders are going to look towards the new opposition leaders for these cushy positions. The pap leaders are not going to mean much to them. If the pap leaders try to mobilize these army guys, the latter will probably reply "Errrr, later can or not?"
