Poor man trapped in Hyundai Avante at Bukit Timah and burnt to death

korean boxes seems to prone to catching fire. last yrs had several cases of the hyundai taxi catch fire for no apparent reason.

Just thinking if he could have lived if he stopped his car after grazing the other car (which stopped at the roadside), or was he fleeing coz of alcohol

The question is whether the enclosed cabin is filled with vapourised alcohol before the cabin was punctured by the crash and ignite like a combustion chamber. A well mixed alcohol and air can be a deadly concoction of a fiery death.

When i lived in USA i used to be terrified of being pulled over by Police late at night, always on look out for trouble, even a busted tail-light and they pull you over.

Here absoutely no Police presense on the roads. -It's a free for all out there.

Avante steering very light. A bit Kan Cheong sure ram ....

Same experience-almost no feel at all(compared to say Honda-my preferred brand).
Won't be surprised if this model has the highest accident rate and is seen in workshops very often.

May be the car lost control. To be burned alive is the most cruel form of death. Sad to hear such a news.

My sympathies with the poor parents and his other siblings.

Matter is made worse if the deceased is the only child. This is quite common in Singapore where families are small.

Readers may remember an accident less then 3 years ago where a car driven by a man with two female companions rammed a tree in Loyang Ave in the wee hours of the morning. It too caught fire and the poor people were burned alive. How very sad.

I cannot recall the make of the car at Loyang Avenue but the company selling these particular car that was involved recently should check how it caught fire.

The drivers should be protected from becoming fiery victims in such accidents in the future.

Maybe the highly-educated senior commanders of the Traffic Police should put up some recommendations to introduce a device that would automatically cut off the speed of the car or some sensors that would detect alcohol and refuse to start. I am sure these are available in the market.

In a nation with small families and less youngsters that would be a most appropriate measure.

Those with Lambos, Masseratis, Porsches and other "speeding monsters" will have to live with such cars for the general safety of all.

1 fire extinguisher, a small break glass hammer might have made a difference.

Needless tragedy. Young man must have fallen asleep at the wheel.

But what's scary too is that the car burst into flames that easily. The barricade should have given way and absorbed most of the energy, but it would seem that the car's structure was weaker than the barricade...

A continentaL car couLd have probabLy saved his Life instead.RIP.

No car is safe for some drivers.

But it is a good idea to get a car with 5-star ANCAP safety ratings.

Hyundai only started making good cars recently.

Before that, their safety record is crap.

Dear Tonychat,

It is wrong to blame the people for you know about their true helplessness in this matter.

None of us will want to pay such a price for such a piece of paper, not even the super-rich and famous.

It is a legislative move that render all of us impotent to the extent that we can honestly do nothing about it.

There are so many voices of dissent against such a requirement but the people in the corridors of power refuse to budge.

Neither are they (elected representatives) brilliant enough to find any alternative solution to control the booming population of vehicles, despite so much of intelligent proposals put forward by the people in the Forum pages of the newspaper and other web-sites, like reach.gov.sg.

If only, the government of the day can listen to the people of Singapore and try to implement some of the ideas presented, I am sure the matter on COE can be resolved.

Until then, we can only watch with horror at the escalating prices.

That poor young man met a tragic end for he could only afford to buy that particular model that "was within his reach".

May he rest in peace and may his parents and siblings come to terms with their sad and tragic loss.

I would not be surprised if he still has a large chunk of his car loan left to be paid off. The bank or finance company that extended that loan will be the key creditor for what is left in his estate. There may not have much left for his parents, except the insurance payouts.

You wanna start with me what you can't finish again?
