Our country is so small and we want to double our rail infrastructure.

To cater for how many?

The whole country is so densely populated there is no room to breathe.

Surely we shud slow population growth to steady state - or even allow contraction.

I remember people were happiest when out population was about 2 to 2.5 million.

No need to increase economic growth we are all so stressed - already we are most unhappy people in the world

Plse up me from moderation

Rubbish. I lived there when the population was below 3 million and I was really miserable. I wanted to sell stuff but the local market was simply too small. The internet wasn't around in those days to extend the reach of an enterprise beyond national borders.

When the PAP started growing the population, I was overjoyed. The opportunities grew by the bucketload. It was an excellent and prudent move by the government and I shall be forever grateful.

boss,
thought you previously thought that Singapore was a pleasant place when the population was below 3 million?

It's fine when you're just a kid but when you have to earn a living, it's a different story altogether.

That's why I admire the PAP so much. They know what is important. There's no point having an island that's pleasant if it's not economically sustainable.

Those who complain about high population didnt know the rationale behind it. We need the critical mass for the local economy n middle class to thrive. Thats why the govt planned for a 5.5 million population way back in the 90s n started talking about it around 2000.

Sam, I didn't know you are back in Singapore. Relatively quiet nowadays with BE looming.

Kinana, are you in your fourth pregnancy?

Well said. I admire your wisdom.

I don't know whether you were born yet or still in pampers. I remember 5.5 million was meant to be the terminal population and that was all this country could support. If you look at the latest announcement on expanding the MRT network and do a simple calculation. Doubling the network, from serving 60% of the population, you will be serving just 80% of the people implies that, since we are already at terminal population, the population in 2030 is projected to be more than 8 million. It is very clear that the government has lost control of this population thing. Unlike other countries which have practically unlimited land, unbridled population is a major issue for Singapore. Very mono dimensional thinking, if the govt is just looking at total economy size.

The 5.5 million was projected for around 2015 and we are on target.
There was never any mention of terminal population at all so please don't bullshit around here ok?

So you were born only yesterday and not born when they first talked about 5.5 million terminal population. When they missed their target (in this case over exceeded their target), they revised their target. I am sure today's projection of terminal could be around 10 million, so it cannot be wrong. 2030 is already projected to have 8 million population from what I can deduce from the MRT announcement.

The govt never onec talked about a terminal population my dear. Don't BS here please.
Where did you get the 8 million figure from? Again please don't BS.

Thanks for bringing up the subject on "critical mass" for economic growth. I have heard it so often and have no idea how it works for a economy of a small country that relies on export instead of domestic market.

On the subject of "critical mass", I am aware that many things need a critical mass to operate efficiently. For example, the shit in the rectum need to reach a critical mass before it can pass out smoothly. However, if our intake of fibre is low, the shit would still not flow even if the rectum is so extended that it is about to burst - we will have constipation.

Sometimes, when suffering from constipation, I can't help relating my discomfort to this little island. It appears to be constipated with shit that is going nowhere and yet more shit keeps flowing in because of the "big greedy mouth above".

Please do teach me how "critical mass" works for our economy that has little land and depends on export and how is the magic figure of 5 plus million derived, so that I can accept my constipation pain with gratitude. Thank you.

I drove from Choa Chu Kang to Paya Lebar just now thru Fri evening peak hours and it took me only 35 minutes.
How are we constipated?
Please explain.

If anyone believes Singapore is not overcrowded now, better to stop trying to convince them.... Their brain cells too sparsely populated

Your post always bring back memory of my kindergarten teachers. My teacher told us the story of blind men trying to figure out the shape of an elephant - some said it is flat, some said it is like a stick... Probably it is the same way of analysis that is how we can conclude that 1 journey from CCK to PL in 35 minutes means no constipation. Once a little white worm in the shit told the man: "Mr, don't worry, you have no constipation. I wriggle out of your rectum through the shit in less than 3 minutes you know? How can you be having constipation??"

Anyway thank you. Guess you also don't know how the 5 million figure is derived.
