SINGAPORE - A boy, 13, has been arrested on suspicion of causing a fire at the bicycle bay of a HDB block in Tampines.

The boy is believed to have thrown a lighted sparkler at a bicycle parked at Block 842F Tampines Street 82 on December 14.

The bicycle was damaged as a result of the fire, the police said in a statement today.

He was found and arrested at about 9.15pm on the same evening.

In a statement, the police said that such acts of mischief not only constitute a serious offence, but are also potentially dangerous.

"Parents are also advised to remind their children, especially youths, about the severe consequences of committing such acts," a spokesperson said through the statement.

Any person found guilty of mischief by fire may face a jail term of up to seven years, and also be liable to a fine.

Actally, i dont understand why hdb likes to build tables and chairs in the void deck. No elderly folks are using it. It's usually the stupid young kids smoking and drinking beer. Everyday, its in a mess, ashes, beer cans and lots of rubbish!

lianbeng tikam 2 cents: those stone seats n tables are meant for residents of that block to come down n chitchat together after dinner to build up rapport mah. certainly not for criminal offences like that.

If that kid is conscious of it, he won't be arrested.

12-year-old among group of 4 detained over alleged mischief by fire

The police have arrested four teenagers, aged between 12 and 15, for allegedly causing mischief by fire.

At about 4.15pm yesterday, officers responded to a call about a group of youths seen playing with fire and burning paper at Block 411 Serangoon Central.

But the youths had already fled the scene by the time police arrived. They were later found and detained.

Investigations are on-going. Anyone who is convicted of mischief by fire faces a maximum of seven years in jail, and a fine.
