As a Singaporean, I agree with Dr V. Subramaniam that the attitudes, values, perceptions and practices between expatriate and Indian Singaporeans differ (“Yawning gap between Indian S’poreans and new Indian expats“; Wednesday).
I used to work for a Singapore public-listed company that was run by Indian nationals. The top management staff were from India, while the lower-level jobs were done by Singaporeans.
The Indian expats in the company always spoke in Hindi during meetings, despite the presence of Singaporeans in the room, and despite our reminders to speak in a language common to all – English.

INDIAN High Commissioner T.C.A. Raghavan expounded on the poor interaction between Indian Singaporeans and Indian expatriates (“Indian expatriates ‘need time to fit in’”; Sept 26). He also expressed confidence that this issue would get resolved over time.
While I agree that interaction and integration are natural processes that take time to evolve in any country, there is already a yawning gap between these elements here.
Many Indian Singaporeans born and bred here have parents who emigrated from India, seeking a better life.
We have worked hard, made good, served our national service commitments dutifully and, while leading settled and contented lives, have also welcomed Indian arrivals to help expand the talent pool and contribute to the economy.
In the past, many Indian expatriates have assimilated well. But the more recent wave of Indian expatriates prefer to keep to themselves and socialise only with those like them, even at places of worship and at cultural events.
They show little inclination to get involved with Singapore society, despite official and private efforts to encourage closer links.
Attitudes, values, perceptions and practices between expatriates and Indian Singaporeans inevitably differ.

There will come a day when Hindi displaces Tamil as one of the four official languages of Singapore.

Changi Business Park is like a Hindustan town..

Can hear Hindi everywhere over there.. The Nothern Pariahs have totally colonised the place..

If Singaporeans feel they are superior than brahmins.

They should do an MBA so as to compete with them in corporate management jobs.

And stop kow peh kow bu.

Ahh.. Seen many of these Pundeks there too..

Pinoy also the same. Even on FB and twitter always talking in their annoying language. When I was in OZ, some of my Ozzie neck neck colleagues also annoyed at them.

Back then when I was still staying with my parents in Tampines, we had this Pundek family from India as our next door neighbour.. Family all dark skinned like those from Southern India.. Claimed to the rest of the neighbours that they can't speak Tamil as they hailed from the northern part of India.. Had my doubts about his claims as the father, his wife and 2 brat monkey sons are all dark skinned..

The father always speaks to his fucktard iritating eldest son in Hindi each time infront of the neighbours to show us that they really came from the Northern part of Pundek Land..

Until one day I overheard the father shouting to his son and scolding him in Tamil..:D LOL..LOL.. Picha Lobang ahh.. Seems like the dad was ashamed of his family's Southern Pariah Land roots until he had to lie to the rest of the neighbours to hide his family's true background..:o

Also had a indian neighbour that stayed above me in the early 80s. But they were catholics. They themselves admit to my mom that they stay away from other keling because of kelings social problems. That time majority of kelings choose to stay in marsiling and woodlands. They lived in Yishun.

WiLL there be a face-off between our LocaL & Foreign Ah Nehs one day ?..:D

thats why english is the common language for business... but we have to kow tow to foreigners in this country, so ....

MoraL of the story ?..never Lose hoLd of our DiaLects. The nextime these Foreign Ah Nehs speak in their tongues',
we can combat them with our Kheks, Hokkiens, Cantonese etcc..;)

Even their own kind cannot stand their own kind....must be the smell!! ha ha ha

zeddy,

Their dark skins are a giveaway that they are southerners, as northern Indians are fair skinned. Hindi is the national language of India, so both the dark skinned or fair skinned Indians can speak it.

I noticed there's no huge anger. Just the issue being raised but that's it. It's like a minor annoyance. Now suppose this was some chinese speaking in mandarin amongst themselves. Immediately everyone would be outraged. I mean literally angry like they want to kill them. When northern kelings do it speaking their own language. Nuh not much of a problem. The southern kelings also seem pretty cool about it cos to them they also only know how to blame chinese ppl. They would rather hear a foreign language like hindi than chinese.

ICA forgot to inform them when they integrate them here, that when they speak Hindi, they must have sub-titles in , English, Chinese, Malay & Tamil!..can't say Indian. After that, we can embrace them!
