He said: "People are not so poor. They think their Government is not poor so they expect the Government to do more for them.

"They're not poor but they feel less well-off relatively than others they can see in society. There is that relative sense that 'I should get my entitlement'."

S'poreans expect more as Govt is 'not poor': PM

04:45 AM Oct 01, 2012

SINGAPORE - Singaporeans think their Government is "not poor" and, thus, expect it to do more for them, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Mr Lee, during a wide-ranging interview with The Australian newspaper that touched on US-China relations and rising Chinese nationalism, was responding to a question on whether he thought the Western world was suffering from "a crisis of entitlement spending" and whether there were lessons for Singapore.

He said: "People are not so poor. They think their Government is not poor so they expect the Government to do more for them.

"They're not poor but they feel less well-off relatively than others they can see in society. There is that relative sense that 'I should get my entitlement'."

The United States, Britain and Europe see a large part of their budget go towards entitlement spending, he noted.

"How do you cut back on spending when benefits, once given, cannot be taken back?" Mr Lee said.

"(Singapore) started with very minimal welfare and we've gone on the basis of growth and high employment and low unemployment. If you're out of a job you can find a new job. You will get help but the help is not something you're absolutely entitled to. We have to adjust that without going overboard and ending up where the Americans are or the Europeans are or where the New Zealanders were."

The interview, published on Saturday, comes ahead of Mr Lee's official visit to Australia this week.

Asked how he felt about the US-China relationship, Mr Lee said: "I think the powers-that-be on both sides, Chinese leaders and the US administration, after they get elected, have shown they don't want to go on the route of confrontation, whatever might be said during presidential elections."

As for the rising Chinese nationalism, he noted the proliferation of "Internet opinion" as well as the new generation of Chinese who grew up during a period of China's rapid emergence and growing self-confidence.

"The younger generation have not seen the horrors of war, or the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution, and they just see China getting bigger and stronger every day. They just say the time has come for us to take our rightful place. The Chinese government has to take that into account."

singapore also started with ministers who were truly in sync with the citizens. they were drawing a reasonable honest pay, well at least until now where our pm is the highest paid - 6 times more than usa president to rule a smallest little dot.

I agree with PM LHL comment.
People waiting to gov hand out. Even those earning $3k and above. They drive car use Iphone, wear branded clothes.
They should be shame of themself.
There are many earning less than $1500/month. This group is the one need help.

ah loon shud juz show dat repot dat says sinkielan got ze mostest millionair$ n tel peasants 2 stfu! ...

He is implying that the government is not rich, & we the citizens , are not poor..then, we have to sit up & listen & ponder our future...where is our Money?

would the citizens get to know - or even a peek at how much money is lost in foreign investments or wasted on feeding to white elephants?

i definitely remember pinky's promise about rising the gst. he said: NO ONE SHALL BE LEFT BEHIND..... and INCREASED GST WOULD BE ABLE TO HELP MORE NEEDIES & POOR. finally, HIGHER GST ACTUALLY HELPS MORE BUSINESSES....

now i really comprehend the essence of his promise. it's actually meant the reversal.

There are no reports on the exact number of Sinkie shitizens that constitutes the millionaire population though. What we do know is that a third of the high net worth individuals in Sinkieland are Indonesians. Does anyone really think the remaining 2/3rds are all Sinkies?

when these foreigners are naturalised into pirated singaporeans, the gahmen proudly annouces that they are SINGAPOREANS - just like wolves in sheep skins are actually sheep to the paps.

I feel LHL is a reluctant politician.
He is into it because of his father.
I think he will step down upon the demise of LKY.

u pay me half of what he's getting - about 1.5M, i shall be also very reluctant. by the way, if i were to be in charge, i get another assistants to assist my dpy PM. obama only has one assistant who is his vice-president with about $400k+ annual pay. for our very own $3M+ (bonus, fringe benefits/priveieges and fatter pension not included yet) PM, he has 2 deputies to assist.

it appears that a little red dot is at least 6 times more expensive and needs more heavy-duty indian chiefies and an ultra pink indian chief to handle than the entire USA.

it's not the size of the cherry that count. it's the intensity of it that matters most.

he wont' step down. like his immortal old man, he is hoping to rule beyond 70 yo, that is, if his ass cancer doesn't get him first prematurely.

by the way, if the fengshui is conducive, the lee dynasty shall continue into the 3rd heir ascending to the dragon throne. perhaps, i should narrate this futuristic legend.

anyone wanna listen to the prophecy of the 3rd Ascent of the Dragon?
