We hear and see so many displeasure expressed online, discomfort felt on the ground. Are they real or imagined? WHY are so many of us spending so much time online discussing the present state of our country, on what our future may or will become and so on? For the sake of our country and citizenry. i say let’s not be discouraged by our PM and feel free to use anonymity to discuss here. It’s a ploy to make us look bad. If you sincerely feel you are well intended and has the nation at heart, don’t bother to look back. We know the reasons why it’s safer to discuss here than out on the streets.
Back to why spend so much time here. my conclusion is no other than because we the citizenry are not comfortable with where the gahment is leading us. We, the 40%, are losing fast and may even not be too wrong to say has lost confidence in them. Do you think none of the 60% also feel the same ? if not for fear of losing their rice bowl, they too follow their hearts and not their heads.
Let’s pool our resources together, take a very concise look on what is really brewing on the ground in Singapore now. Lets gather all the facts and debunk the gahment’s contention that we are just grousers and don’t have the nation at heart. Lets keep each other informed in TRE.
No country in this world, past n present, has ever imported into their country as many foreigners as their own population in a very short span of just abt 10 yrs. We are the first and only. I don’t believe there will be a second. As the gahment of the day, won’t they have ponder deeply and to have it planned comprehensively before embarking on it.
First stage : whether they can handle it. in our case, our gahment was very confident at the importation stage. Majority of the citizens trusts them very much. They are well aware of this. Pls remember this stage happened ard 10 yrs ago. Around the end of GCT’s PMship. Those days, due to past excellent record, majority of the citizens don’t question and have lots of confidence in what the gahment does and will do for us. We wouldn’t believe, even to the last mile of spore, they wouldn’t take our well being as their first priority before doing anything that may be detrimental to us. So the importation could get on very well. Primarily because the citizens had no inkling of their plan to have mass import for the next 10 yrs. Doing it on the quiet. Isn’t it only the last few yrs we are fully aware of their master plan ? Anybody disagree ?
Next stage. To see to the day to day managing and handling of the beast. Beast because i am sure the gahment themselves are uncertain they can get pass this stage like the first. None of the present leaders has this experience before. not even LKY. We are now at this stage. The gahment is happy they attained their GDP target. All gahment sectors n those connected are rewarded handsomely. They pat themselves n celebrate their success. Now we look at the other side of the result. The citizens the gahment is supposed to look after. Is the majority of the citizens also a part of this success ? is it true that they now, to their horrors, realize they are actually not a part. If true, isn’t all the proclamation of inclusiveness the gahment keeps harping on and promised but not delivered is a failure on their part ?.
Did the the following not happened to the citizenry n the country at this stage ? let’s leave it to the experts to answer if it’s true
1. Low end workers’ salaries stagnate because of easily available cheap foreign labour. This i know Is widespread now
2. Mostly of lower middle and middle income earners’ (PMET) salaries stagnated as well. again due to easily available cheaper foreign labour. how widespread is it ? this is the core of our society. If they don’t well, there’s really nothing to be proud of or show to the world. No way to maintain, what more to increase TFR. This is the largest pool for potential for TFR to improve. If they are troubled by uncertainties and don’t have confidence in their jobs, how well can our country progress ? other countries may only look at our GDP. But do you think the gahment can contain the resentment if this group’s livelihood is threatened by the influx.
3. Hasn’t the infrastructure been overloaded n rendered as below par for service standards
– MRT to the extend we need $900 millions of tax payers’ money to rescue, putting aside the recklessness of the former CEO Saw for neglecting maintenance. And we have to pay another $ 10 millions to be told what we already know before the COI !!! so much for claiming our MRT as world class. Don’t think they can do so again for a long time. Jam packed traveling in public transport. Huge human traffic, therefore longer time to commute to n fro during workdays. Affect the time can be spent with the family. Has effect if not totally on productivity and TFR. more reasons for frustrations
–Shortage of hospital beds because of the sudden explosion of population. Long long waiting time for consultation in public clinics. Affects productivity
Note : Appreciate if anybody can help to add more for us to know whatother effects we have to endure
4. Our identity – it took almost 50 yrs for us to have just became a cohesive society. Now, we don’t have as much distrust among our 4 races as before. We had very much assimilated, understood and tolerated each other very well. We now live very peacefully with each other. We call it racial harmony though not a perfect one. Can’t find one anywhere anyway. but certainly not one like ours everywhere. Now we get a host of different nationalities. Easily 3 new major kinds (PRCs, Pinoys n Indians. Though we have Indians but they don’t know our cultures well like our local Indians) and a few others. The gahment ask us to integrate. Now they ask them to do so too. Looks fair. For those who are sincerely here to stay, they have to do more than us, true ? Let’s say Ms. Grare Fu allows me to stay in her house permanently. Won’t i have to accommodate to her more than her to me ? Or will she will allow equal. Would you tell me i am mad if i tell you “Oh she will be very nice. She will let me treat her house as mine”. You tell me which she will choose. Has she ever lived in public housings, shared all public transport and so on regularly with these foreigners like us before ? i really wonder if our gahment has ever asked themselves which other country can accept such conditions. My honest answer is no one will. it will be rubbish to say other countries will think we are xenophobic and reflect us badly if they themselves can’t. what do you think ? I have no hesitation to believe they will react like us. Some will even react worse. you out there agree ? We now feel very uneasy when we see so many types of foreigners in huge numbers in public places. Please don’t kiddy us and say we have foreigners all this while. We are talking about huge numbers here. You no more have the home belonging feeling. Invaded ? Kee Chiu if yes. Will we have to go thru again those days when we have racial disharmony and riots before we can settle down again in maybe next 40 yrs time ? Or may end up differently this time ? For those who are here to make a living and leave when their time is up, is Ms. Grace Fu also asking them and us to assimilate ? You think that can happen ? isn’t this group is in huge numbers ? i am sorry if that’s not you meant. As we continue living like this, add one more reason to add to our frustration
OK no time to continue more. perhaps another day. Just some last words before going.
Before all these happened, we have lots of respect for the gahment. Isn’t this why they could keep winning so many elections and by big margins many a time until recently. The present lot of our leaders don’t have to contend with the type of living conditions as us. they won’t know how it feel. Is it enough just saying i understand when there’s no sign of doing anything to bring back those good old days. Perhaps you can’t now even if you want to. The influx is not complete yet. So can’t stop half way So wait for next stage. See if resentment will start to build up, sets in and what next ? will the pot of soup start to and then really boil by now ?
I for one don’t doubt that whatever the gahment tries to do to justify or to make a success of the influx of foreigners, a composition of around 30% of REAL FTs, FWs and 70% (not FT/FW) for the rest (my estimation – could somebody please furnish us an accurate figure), will not materialize. To me, it’s childish and wishful thinking.
Better to leave to the intelligentsia to explore and maybe can give us a better explanation on how it may or will turn out.
