NOT because we choose to run around waving little red books, pillory our intellectuals, and burn crops to make rotten steel because the genocidal egomaniac Chairman Mao said so.
They ended up like that as they have forgotten what this man said, what he said though is relevant to many countries, not just China:

Translated for the first 3 minutes of his speech:
I know, you are very anxious. Zhang Xun is now restoring the monarchy. The parliament cannot be convened yet again.
Myself? My anxiety are not about this. I have thought about this a lot recently. We were a democratic republic
but why are we having recurrences of feudalism, oppressiveness and resurgence of authoritarian behavior?
As long as this issue is not resolved, authoritarian behaviour and nepotism, will definitely take place.
A democratic republic will always remain but a dream made up of nothing but bubbles and foam.
At the core and the principles of democracy as we know, are the three main ideals.
Equality, Freedom and Encompassing love.
But instead, what did we see these past 6 years since the republic was established? All levels of the civil administration have scant regard for the rule of law. The people, are still being enslaved today.
A democracy republic should be a free country. Freedom is a right that the people are given as a birthright. But for the past 6 years, what have we seen? Only freedom for those in power.
Those high in power enjoys a high degree of freedom and those who are smaller in position gets smaller levels of freedom. What about the people? No rights. No freedom.
A truly democratic republic should be a country with encompassing love and acceptance. One for all and all for one.
Yet, what have we seen since our republic was established? Only the love born out of fear does the people have, for the administration. What about the administration then? Only lip service, speaking of only hypocritical love for the people.
What about the type of real and genuine encompassing love , we cannot see it!
A country for the people, all the more should be a country ruled by law but yet for the past 6 years, we have only seen administrative powers being used again and again used without any regards to interfere with the due process of the law.
If you do not listen, I will bribe you. If you do not follow, I will arrest you, even assassinate you.
Enforcers of the law, then becomes, mere prostitutes to be ravished at the whims of those in power.
