Metal ruler wasn't out during my days, it was in later years, when I had to use them to do line drawings, but we have the ROTAN. It was normal for kids like us, to stand in line, if we failed our tests or didn't pass up homework; hands out & get smacked by a ruler ( a thick big ones).

Another fond memory from my youth...

During my primary school days, we had many crazes and fads during recess. Playing chateh, hopskotch, hide-and-seek, peeping in girls toilet, plucking fruits from the orchard etc.

Once, there was a fad with swordfighting using rulers. A few boys fought with rulers in the basketball court during recess. As the days passed, more and more boys would join in the fight, rushing to the basketball court with a ruler in hand when the recess bell rang, and many girls watched in awe from the balconies on the second and third floor as the boys jousted in the basketball court.

At first, the ruler swordfight was fun and gradually it became more and more violent/competitive. The amazing thing was that no teacher intervened, and the principal also didn't put a stop to it. Everyone used a plastic or wooden ruler. Rulers were broken daily and the bookshop auntie was only too happy to sell more rulers to the boys.

Then one day, I smuggled in a metal ruler. No one else had a metal ruler.

Let's just say that on that fateful day, I destroyed many rulers and caused much pain/bleeding/crying.

Even more amazing, I wasn't caught or punished. The principal finally stopped the daily 'fight club' ritual and confiscated many rulers. I managed to sneak away and hid my metal ruler in a safe place. Because there were too many boys, it was quite chaotic and no one identified me.

Kids these days do not know what they're missing.

On Wednesday, Education Minister Heng Swee Keat touched on Madam Serene Ong's filing of a police report after a teacher had cut her son's hair.

He had mentioned the incident briefly in the annual MOE Work Plan Seminar speech to 1,000 principals and educators at Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

Madam Ong, 39, had filed the police report on Aug 16 after her son's teacher cut his hair just as he was about to sit for his PSLE oral exam.

Said Mr Heng: "The simple fact is that the son was reminded, over and over again, to trim his hair; and when that failed, the school sent a letter to the parent.

"The mother's response was that her son was dyslexic and therefore forgetful."

Mr Heng had touched on teachers being "over anxious" in dealing with demanding parents in his speech, and hoped that parents see and "value teachers as their partners too".

you forget it is the boy who flouted the rules first. and despite repeated warnings, he did not cut his hair to a standard acceptable by his school.

nonetheless, the mother should take out a private summons against the teacher if she feels wronged.

I have no doubt that the teacher has overstepped her authority. However the mother obviously thought the world revolved around her. The kid was warned, letter sent and nothing done. It reflects poorly on the parents and shows the lack of EQ and social consciousness.

Lets put it this way - the mother has been made to look like a petty fool and an imbecile. She deserved it, thinking that she can throw her weight around and lodging a police report. Now she is backtracking suggesting that the school did not stop her from making a Police report.

I have not been following the hullabaloo over this case. I thought there should be standard guidelines for this kind of things - verbal warning - parent letter - detention - suspension - explusion. Rules and consequences clearly stated, so noone oversteps. Just an example, if a girl turns up with colorful bra under the thin white PE T shirt, after repeated warnings, is it OK for the teacher to remove her bra?

Actually the teacher's hairdressing skills is not too bad, she can consider alternative career at the $10 shop.

If you as it seems, allows the teacher to overact then why are you at the same time disallowing a mother to do so likewise?

Every school has a disciplinary master. If someone was to act on the punishment then it would have been the disciplinary master. This is similar to Annuar Ibrahim getting whacked in prison for repeatedly going against his opponents. Rules are rules and they should apply for parties. If the student and even his mother fails to adhere to them then we should allow due process to take place. We should not allow overzealous and dastardly individuals within the system to overstep their right of place to mete out punishment. This teacher should be brought to task. There is no other way.

Why do you say that I forgot who was first that broke a rule? You assume too much in your policed-state of mind. That the child was punished is a good thing. The issue is how, by whom. and when the punishment was meted out. And let us not forget the juiciest part which is the minister coming on board to put down the family while essentially encouraging such actions from teachers in general.

You should also take note that the child was wronged and it is rightfully so that the mother takes action on the teacher. I am disappointed that you did not encourage the teacher whacking the mother or cutting her hair or doing something sinister to the mother since it was the mother too that did not listen to the teacher.
