SINGAPORE: Some residential and commercial properties will be acquired for the construction of the new Thomson MRT Line.

The post office along Upper Thomson Road will be one of them. It was opened 54 years ago.

The next closest post office for the area is at the Bishan Community Club.

But to many patrons, what's special about the stand-alone Thomson Road Post Office, is the ease and convenience of doing business there.

"There're parking lots for us, maybe for a while, like... five to 10 minutes. If they rebuild a new post office with a parking space, that would be good for us," said one patron.

"Occasionally I come here, I do not live around this area... (The post office) has been around for a long time and I have over the years been coming here. I would kind of miss it," said another.

One of the more iconic buildings in Chinatown, Pearls Centre, will also be torn down to make way for the new Thomson Line.

Pearls Centre has been around for some 40 years.

The 243 tenants have about two years to move out.

But some of the 44 residents Channel NewsAsia spoke to were surprised at the announcement, as they had recently renovated their units.

The Singapore Land Authority said compensation will be pegged to the market value of the property as determined by professional valuers.

But some tenants are worried the compensation would be lower than what they would get, if the building had gone en-bloc.

Christina Sim, director, Residential, Cushman and Wakefield, said: "Certainly when a development goes en-bloc or collective sale, there is a premium attached to what a property seller would be able to command if it is sold on an individual basis and certainly much so if it is compared to a compulsory acquisition."

Ms Agnes Low, a resident at Pearls Centre, said: "If the government gives us a price that is not acceptable, of course we will not agree to sell off. Of course everybody wants to make money."

Bryan New, a shop tenant at Pearls Centre, said: "It's really not a shock to me because I heard from some of the tenants that the management is trying to do an en-bloc for the whole building, but what I didn't expect is the government (coming) in."

MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC, Indranee Rajah, will meet tenants of Pearls Centre on Saturday to better understand their concerns about having to move out within the next two years.

Ms Indranee said the next two days will give business owners and residents time to digest the news.

Her greatest concern is for those using their units as a home, who now need to find another place.

She said the Singapore Land Authority will do its best to facilitate, but stressed it's not like the Selective En Bloc Redevelopment Scheme, where there is a replacement unit.

"In any land acquisition... your compensation (will be) the market value of the unit. It is not for the replacement unit. So I quite clearly understand how they think and feel about it. So the question is, what is the next best thing that can be obtained for them. Because I fully understand the feelings especially if you've stayed there for many years of your life. It's not just the physical place, it's the whole atmosphere," she said.

To Develop More And More Concrete

We are losing our heritage very quickly. It's for the sake of the FTs ? We are also losing greenery and sightseeing scenery ?

I think I saw another forecast map that was even more complicated.
Pearl Centre should go..it's a fucking eyesore.

Pearl centre is an eyesore? There are worse buildings: Orchard Plaza; Lucky Plaza; Far EAst Plaza; Far East SHopping Centre; Orchard Central. These buildings should be culled.

Pearl centre has some thai disco and a few ktvs right? It's also home to a number of residents. Usual china town stuff in there like the other Chinatown scs

I'm no architect....it's just my personal view...maybe I biased due to the experience inside the building...the carpark is terrible, the shops looks sleazy with its RA cinemas prevoiusly and now it's turning into some sort of amulet hub now with conmen types.

Hard to keep track of all the places they will be acquiring & demolishing for the MRT & road expansion : Rochor, Pearl Centre, Thomson, parts of Bishan, Marymount, .....

There's nothing sacred to the PAP. Anyone's home might be next. When they've finished with this round they'll probably start with the next round & so it goes on. There will be no end to this because as long as the PAP is involved in bizness there will always be profit to be made:rolleyes:

That disco has fights every other day...it's the types that hang there...even switched hands serveral times din help.
The HFJ and ktv are better.

They all building all these MRT lines based on present or future population growth?
If it is based on future growth then they must be predicting a future population of 8 to 10 million people?
If it is based on present population then they must be cock sure the economy will sustain these infrastructures in the future, if not they are just mortgaging the future our children for familee short term glory.
I hope the 60% could be wiser.

You are right, as it is pappies already kpkb the critical ridership is not there for the recently opened new line.
I think when this happens they will scrap all the buses to get everyone on the MRT.

I wonder when will the day come when pearl centre will be demolished. Also 2 private properties will be demolished at steven rd area. Upper thomson has quite a huge traffic jam too around the evening time. Imagine it to get even worse with all the stupid works going on around that area. The post office is near the jalan kayu prata house, a church and thomson plaza omg i wonder if a cluster fuck will occur around there.

Government want to execute compulsory aquisition. Agnes can refuse to sell:confused:

Even if the 60% do wake up it's probably too late. Sporeans are stuck with all these expensive projects :(
Used to think the PAP bean counters monitored the dollar & sense of all these projects but we've seen that it's all about personal monetary interests & profit.

The PAP can't even maintain the current infrastructure properly & they are looking at expanding it:eek:

Just curious if the gov't has ever offered a fair price for any land they have acquired:confused:

Hated The Merlion

I think I saw another forecast map that was even more complicated.
Pearl Centre should go..it's a fucking eyesore.

I don't like the Merlion. Pearl Centre is just one of the casualties of our quick pace development. It's existence is a needful contrast with our cookie cutter urban planning in all housing estates.

How many were given up for the sake of heightening the concrete to put in more shopping space and shops ? It's all about money and more money which eventually we don't even know who we are anymore when we look into the mirror. Singapore has changed, and so are we.

We lose lots of sunlight and greenery.

Merlion = Dagon

Singapore = Phoenicia

Both are great seaports for marine trade. And both of them are very rich.

Huat Ah !

Sporeans are stuck with all these expensive projects :(

it's all about personal monetary interests & profit.

The PAP can't even maintain the current infrastructure properly & they are looking at expanding it:eek:

You mean the money from their left pockets goes into their right pockets ? Money goes from coffer to corporate, and then, to personal accounts ? That's how it is, isn't it ?

But, big accounts from Mindef is always the best place to dig.

based on nothing. :mad::mad::mad:

you neber notice construction is an ever on going thing here ?
because of the tiny size (land and population) , it sustained the economy during recession ,
it boasted the economy when time is good.
go find out how construction industry is linked to many other industries and services.

some predicted a recession is coming. i bet live goes on here as usual as happened before. ;););)

in short , we must keep building and building (including demolishing and demolishing) :D:D:D
