Pearls centre, thomson post office, will be demolished for the new thomson line

What's the point of tearing down Pearl's Centre for another MRT line when:

1) There's already an Outram Park MRT station a stone throw's distance away from Pearl's Centre.
2) Further down along the road is Chinatown MRT station (NE line).

I swear that this incessant demolishing/building serves only two (interlinked) purposes:

1) Artificially propping up the economy.
2) Profit maximization for publicly listed transport companies.

Pearl's Centre/Yangtze Cinema in 2007:

Compare with now:

Notice the changes from 2007-2012:

1) No more Burger King.
2) Yangtze Cinema (and its hand-painted movie posters) are no more.
3) No more Chinese medicine wine centre, now it's replaced by mostly massage and beauty salons.
4) New mall facade (e.g. green words replaced by blue).

Pearl centre is an eyesore? There are worse buildings: Orchard Plaza; Lucky Plaza; Far EAst Plaza; Far East SHopping Centre; Orchard Central. These buildings should be culled.

They are not eyesores, but a heritage from the past.

The same goes for Beauty World/Bukit Timah Shopping Centre/Plaza, City Plaza etc.

Not every mall has to be like Ngee Ann City or Ion Orchard.

Singaporeans will never have a true sense of belonging when the govt goes about culling Rochor Centre, the National Stadium at Kallang, the Red Brick National Library and a good chunk of Bidadari Cemetery, all in the name of the almighty dollar.

When is it enough?

Re: Huat Ah !

You mean the money from their left pockets goes into their right pockets ? Money goes from coffer to corporate, and then, to personal accounts ? That's how it is, isn't it ?

But, big accounts from Mindef is always the best place to dig.

Mindef would only be investigated if the PAP was no longer in power. Whoever takes over will have plenty of work investigating the PAP let alone Mindef :D

It's exactly what they want, to kill the emotional attachment we have for the country. It doesnt take a genius to see they saved many colonial buildings, but culled many significant independence, nation building -era buildings.

Memorable place for me.

Was selling cassettes and tape recorders there while waiting for O-Level results. It wasn't sleazy back then.

And behind was a HDB 1-room block with excellent morning dim-sum.

The Ah Peks will be the most affected. They will miss all the good shows.

Posting this again. It seems like a few nursing homes and a school are affected. Steven's rd area also affected and 2 private properties are also affected. I think part of one household has to give way which means the entire house has to move out.

It says great world city will be affected too. I wonder what will they do to it. I don't think they will actually demolish the buildings probably just do a major facelift to them. Then again who knows.

LOL, even SCGS and Great World City are not spared.

What else is there to say?

In future those who chiong zouk can easily get there from mrt. Hooray ah!!!

No More Old Places !

You are right. What about the east side ?

Not just the Burger King. This also reminds me of the East Coast Park's Mc Don. Sigh.
