A Life of A Taxi Driver - What Do You Know???

It's so so easy to simply sit behind a screen, raved and rant about Cabbies. No wonder the White Shit Skin, Body Perfumed Odoured Indians from India, Nose diggers Chinamen/women from PRC and many Demanding and Demeaning Nationality and Bad Attitude foreigners thinking Singapore is Surviving because of Them, Jokers just to name a few, are looking down at Us because of us Fellow Singaporean, shooting our own foot with our big fouled mouth commentary.

Just because one or a couple of idiotic Taxi Drivers, we go on to condemn the whole generation of Taxi Drivers. Worst still we look down upon Taxi Drivers as illiterates, Uneducated and last resort pathetic job on earth. Why such an abuse on Taxi Drivers. Have you been to London? Australia, USA?or Any Asian Country like the Philippines, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam or even Thailand? If you have been to all these places, then you will be the first to defend your own local Taxi Drivers and be grateful and thankful our Cab Drivers are the best, and the Taxi Operators, like Comfort Cab are the most Technologically Advance, Customer Driven and Caring Company as compared to those countries I make mentioned above.

Cab drivers today goes through a stringent criteria and exams and minimal 'O' Level or equivalent, English a must and criminal record free before you can apply to be a cabbie. Mind you the Most of the so called Educated and Language deformed Individuals have to take 7 to 14 times to pass the Exam before getting their LTA Vocational License.

Agreed that Taxi Drivers should be well dressed with collared shirts clean and neat, shoes, polite, helpful and kind but sometimes these are not adhered to and thus defines the attitude of that Individual but not the all the Cabbies at large so please remember, "Talking without Thinking, is like Shooting without Aiming".

Taxi Drivers have their fair share of Stories too:

a. Being hit and run, killed by Ferrari, cut in the neck and throat, robbed cheated etc.
b. Takes a booking making several U- Turns and turns etc upon reaching location passenger takes another cab thereby making a fool of the booking system.
c. Makes a booking just before peak hour and only takes the cab after peak hour is over.
d. Gives a direction only to a certain point and then do not know the way blames the cabbies for not knowing the direction and as a cab driver he ought to know excuse etc.
e. Takes out a Big note for a less then $5/- taxi fare thinking that the cabbie is a Mobile Money Changer
f. Expects us to know all the short cuts on this Island where the streets are constantly changing unlike the country they come from where everything is a standstill and yet complain.
g. Check on the Cabbies every few minutes and the cab meter to ensure cabbies don't manipulate
h. Uses their own GPS to check on Taxi DriveR taking the correct direction etc NOT KNOWING THAT there are so many ways to go at certain places in Singapore.
I. Expects Cabbies to be a person with a mobile mirror ball knowing where and where there are a jam, accident or massive traffic etc.
j. Speaks in strange accent and language and complains we brought them to a wrong direction like for eg. lokyang/Loyang, circular/circuit road, AYE/ECP; PIE/CTE; BKE/KJE AND MORE.

So whether it is a Chinese, Indian, Malay or Eurasian Cabbies we are people of High Moral Standings not one to sit at home and complain about not having a job etc. We get badly cheated, verbally abused, fooled by manipulating the booking system of getting the best of both world, both by local and foreigners and yet we bear the brunt of it all and bring each and Individual Passenger safely and one piece to your domain and not in coffin RIGHT? Try getting scolded and insulted and ridiculed and as a Cabby we can ONLY Smile and reply, "Welcome to Singapore". PLEASE ALSO NOTE THAT THOSE WHO COMPLAIN THAT YOU CANNOT GET A BOOKING OR A CAB YOU MUST HAVE ABUSED THE SYSTEM MORE THAN ONCE AND AS SUCH PLACED IN A LAST PRIORITY.

So before you speak about Cabbies put yourself in their shoes first and then try to understand the predicament of our Singapore Cabbies and forgive Us please esp. for those errant Cabbies. Be rest assured that a time will come they will have to answer LTA and lose their license as the cabby who shakes his head like a snake and smiling for Colgate advert characters.

Forgive me for writing a long story and infact bore of some of you readers but I want to stand for Cabbies and Companys that make a great difference to Singapore for their clean and well oiled service cabs, friendly Cabbies who ask, "which direction do you want me to take", (NOT THAT WE DO NOT KNOW THE WAY), Most importantly the ONLY Job that ONLY Singaporeans can owned though at times I must admit are being robbed by some illegal PRC during the graveyard shift and without license cabbies especially those that do NOT display their identity please do us a favour report them please I beg you so that you will continue to be served by well trained, well groomed and well learned Cabbies of today. The Taxi Companys in Singapore are waiting for such reports and complains so tha we can wiped these errant cabbies and brings back our earned respect too. Thank You. SMRT, COMFORT CAB and TRANS CAB.

The writer apologizes for his long winded narration. And the writes is also a qualifed Cabby, graduated with a degree in Counselling Psychology, a Qualified Property Agent, served a Government Organization for the past 35 years and decide to drive a Taxi solely because I am my Own Boss, and I answer to me, myself and I and not to any Tom Dickheads and Harries!!!

Why do 99% of all taxi drivers in Singapore overtake cyclists and then cut them off by coming to a screeching halt in front of them to pick up or drop off a passenger. This is what caused the death of my best friend who couldn't stop in time and ended up going head first through the rear window of the taxi.

Can't they just slow down slightly in order to pull up behind cyclists if they need to stop? This more considerate and far safer maneuver only adds 10 to 20 seconds to any schedule and could well save a life.

I am Truly and Sincerely Sorry about your best friend sudden demise from this world because of that inconsiderate and reckless Taxi Driver. I may not be in a position to substantiate his actions but I must confess we Cabbies on a whole does done condone such acts and inconsiderate driving and I am sure he's punished for his ill-gotten action and most importantly it will continue to haunt till today of his action that is for sure my Friend. Once again I am sorry about your friend.

Cab driving is the only sinkie job currently still free from FTs.
I dispute the criminal record portion though....I know many ex-cons driving cabs now.
Taxi drivers used to be much worse....both in attitude and driving....but current standards still leaves much to be desired.

You drive a taxi. I'm sure you've seen your fellow taxi drivers performing this highly inconsiderate and dangerous act while you ply the streets. Have you ever told any of them not to treat cyclists as if they're invisible?

Yes I agree that not only Taxi Drivers are culprits of such highly inconsiderate and rashful acts Infact I also notice the same with other drivers cyclist and motorcyclist included drives in such a pathetic manner. So in the final analysis it's always a blame shifting and finger pointing situation it's sad but a reality on our roads.

Just because Taxi Drivers are seen cutting into path of other motorists or cyclists if I look at the Taxi Drive POV, if he does not pick up his passenger that wave him or her at odd places and junctions he gets a complain and will be served a notice to visit LTA or Taxi Company for a few hours just to justify his inaction. So where does it stops. Damn you do or damn you don't.

So in my humble opinion it takes everyone to play part in keeping our roads safe and free just by observing the safety issues and help each other in providing a service so it's takes two hands to clap. I must qualify that I do not condone the acts of irrational and inconsiderate attitude of Taxi Drivers at the cost of a life for sure. We just want to earn a living and picking up passenger along the way at odd places, crude bends and corner sand at times risking our own life for the sake of our highly demanding and impatient passenger to the kiasu or kiasi passenger itsreallytough on us you know. Thanks

And Yes when and as far as possible weTaxi Drivers have forums and dialogue sessions we do share share such inconsiderate with fellow cabbies but as such usual their reply will always be why the other party don't do the same comes the reply so it's a chicken and egg problem we have here. But for sure these educational sharing sessions does bring about an acknowledgement andan awareness and over timeI am sure this will be an issue of the past.

As in all activities in the lives of Singaporeans there must be a structure of enforcement. In the case of taxis, who takes up the tab? How precise are you in coming up with the figure of 99%? Sinkieland is not NZ, where if you see a fare on the side of the road, there is no half a dozen hungry taxis closing in on your bumper.

Cyclists are invisible to the eyes of taxi drivers? Hell no! Not when they take up a whole lane riding two or even three abreast! And when you need to turn left you have to slow down and follow them at their speed instead of overtaking them in case you kill the best friend of a forum owner.

From cycling on Singapore roads from the age of 11 till I left the damned place 27 years later.

To prove I am not blindly on the side of cabbies. I have more than my share of fellow cabbies cutting into me to rob me of my fare opportunity. So what is so special about cyclists or even a handicap vehicle? Risk is to be accepted on the roads. The word enforcement comes into play here again.

With your impressive qualifications and experience, you choose to cheat yourself by thinking being a taxi driver is being your own boss. The taxi companies are the real boss and you pay them rental everyday and, they can terminate your service anytime.

Become taxi drivers is the easiest way out for those jobless and non-performers. Anyone with class 3 also can become one. I almost became one myself but a taxi driver buddy advised me not to become one. I am glad that I did not choose the easy way out.

You choose to be a taxi driver despite knowing it's a shit job and yet you want others in your shoes. How about put yourself in others' shoes?

I rather you do your part and focus on customer satisfaction, and raise the bar of taxi drivers service standards. Since already taken this path, might as well do your best.

Then perhaps, no one will complain about taxi drivers anymore.

A lowering of the bar to that of the Jah fellow standard if I ever see one.
