5 + 5 + 5 - 5 + 5 + 5 - 5 x 0 (a lot of people answer this wrongly)

Why isn't 0 divided by 0 equal to 1?

0 / 0 = 0 x 1/0 = 1.

OK lah, zero divided by one is zero (this one we all know)
Plus one divided by zero is plus infinity
Minus one divided by zero is minus infinity
Zero divided by zero is undefined just like square root of minus one and it is not the same as infinity (the answer most people give) which is a very very big or very very small number.....

in my school days, i was taught that the whole equation was zero...

then when i google the answer, it says 20. The order of maths operation is in this example link http://www.mathgoodies.com/lessons/vol7/order_operations.html

Looks like either we were taught wrongly in school or the methods of mathematics operation have changed

Problem: Evaluate the following arithmetic expression:

3 + 4 x 2

Solution:

Student 1 Student 2
3 + 4 x 2 3 + 4 x 2
= 7 x 2 = 3 + 8
= 14 = 11

It seems that each student interpreted the problem differently, resulting in two different answers. Student 1 performed the operation of addition first, then multiplication; whereas student 2 performed multiplication first, then addition. When performing arithmetic operations there can be only one correct answer. We need a set of rules in order to avoid this kind of confusion. Mathematicians have devised a standard order of operations for calculations involving more than one arithmetic operation.

Rule 1: First perform any calculations inside parentheses.
Rule 2: Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
Rule 3: Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.

The above problem was solved correctly by Student 2 since she followed Rules 2 and 3. Let's look at some examples of solving arithmetic expressions using these rules.

Answer varies, depends whether it's for GIC, Temasek or Keling.

What is your correct answer?

1. 40
2. 0
3. 15
4. 20

Answer is 20.

Algorithm: BODMAS

Do operations in the following priority (from highest to lowest):

B
rackets
Of
Division
Multiplication
Addition
Subtraction

How about this one :

What is the Sqaure Root of negative One (-1)?

my ex maths teachers some of them already died. fire them in heaven?

Well, I hope they are not teaching maths in Heaven or Hell!!

Clarification, I mean they should have been at that point in time!!

Why isn't 0 divided by 0 equal to 1?

0 / 0 = 0 x 1/0 = 1.

Since everything multiplied by zero = 0, e.g.

1 x 0 = 0
2 x 0 = 0
3 x 0 = 0

... the inverse operation - 0/0 - can be any number (1, 2, 3 ...)

So 0/0 is undefined.

when u use your calculator,

0 divide 0 = calculator says "invalid operation"

sq rt of -1 = calculator scolds "invalid input"

5 + 5 + 5 - 5 + 5 + 5 - 5 x 0 = calculator answers 20

amazing...

Most math calculators will do BODMAS, but can't handle imaginary numbers like √-1.

An ordinary calculator will just do the operations from left to right, giving you an answer of 0.

so which answer is correct? scientific calculator presents 20 and the non scientific calculator presents 0.
