Back in the late 70s, I was always gripped by trepidation whenever I took the SBS bus home on a Saturday after morning ECA. To alert the driver that you wish to alight at the upcoming bus-stop, you have to press the bell but the bell contact is a strip of wire coated by a rubber sheath and is placed at the top of bus ceiling, running the length of the bus. The problem then was I was too short and I can't even reach the bell with my arm at full stretch.
The one foot wooden ruler was my saviour on many occasions.

Ha... Yes. The ruler was my 'saviour' too but it was really difficult trying to aim for the bell contact with one end ofthe ruler while you were holding on to the other end when the bus is jerking around. I still got to stand on tip-toe though.

u can ask the ticket conductor to press for u. i remember those days the some of the older bus had only one door at the center of the bus and the door is permently open thru out the journey. The bus were by bedford or leyland and it front engine and gear stick was a long L shape pole. Along the bus roof, 3-4 sun roof along the length of the bus can be open, giving passengers a cool windy journey, only downside had to close if it raining. Maybe it because of the roof opening, the old bus were more windy than the 90s replacements.

The retro SBS buses with rubber bell contacts and grooved flooring were still in operation until the early 1990s, though most were relegated to becoming feeder buses for MRT stations. By the mid-1990s, the craze was all about the double-decker aircon buses (Super Bus).

The passengers will bunch the space between the front door to the exit door, & the back will be EMPTY, and no one will move, even when there are passengers boarding at the front!!, the bus conductor, will go down the front door walk to the back, bang at the side of the bus, yelling at the passengers " belakang sigit, "lai pin wu qui??".. or shout from the fron door at the top of his/her voice...." Lai pin wu qui"..?!!!

 Even today's german bundesliga commentaries have same voice and accent...

And on public holidays, Circus of the Stars
Live telecast cup final nights were magical.....that's about the only time in the wee hours where almost every household will be up watching........and when a goal is scored (regardless of whichever side).......the whole neighbourhood will roar in unison....usually never get to watch the celebrations after the game as live telecast only paid for the full 90mins of the game!

Not only for soccer but live telecasts of other sports as well........remembered watching badminton all england too

Yes. I did consider asking the bus condcutor. But then as a small boy, even the grouchy bus conductor looks intimidating!

Yes that is called therapy..part of the ticket price, got shock a few times & you get a shock when pressing the bell when it reaches your stop & discover that it is spoilt and does not work, you get off the next bus stop & that is so far away...and your girl friend is waiting for you at the stop you had missed & you are late for the movie...and GF face is blacker than the Kek Leng driver that is smiling at you!!

Bookstores:

Bras Basah Road for all your school text books. Parents would make the annual pilgrimage and if you were too late, the wooden ladder would come down from the second floor onto the public corridor. Anyone remeb these ladder. It was their entry and exit after they closed their store for the day.

2nd hand bookstores for kids and teens. At least one stall can be found in nearly every wet markets manned by English speaking family members of market stallholders. Enid Blyton, war comics, magazines - all second hand, biy and sell. Saints next to Rendezevous was the most famous.

MPH was mothership, Rajaratnam browsing during lunch time. Times started making their move and began recruiting English Language teachers to carry their book trade. Jack Chia was the first to introduce in store coffe joint on second floor.

maybe i was help by a bus conductor at 5yo so i dont find them intimidating. Then i travel alone from town to home, i feel asleep and missed my stop and was woke up by the bus conductor at the terminal at punggol end. He give me ten cents to call home first then ask the another bus conductor whose bus was about to begin the opposite journey to look out for me and waive my return journey fare.

those days ppl were more helpful.

We were all very proud with Wong Peng Soon, Rudy Hartono, Punch Gunalan, the Sidek Brothers carrying the regional flag at the All England finals yearly. The mums and girls went crazy over Rudy. Wanted extra pocket money, this was the time to tap mum - sure get also with big smile.

Held our heads very high. Every Sunday morning, courts all over Singapore occupied. Yonex 7000 was the ultimate.

Family arranged transport to school via Morris Minor with couple of kids, all the kids will look out for the distinct "hand signal with inbuilt bulb" that came out from the side. Had a hard time persuading parents to allow me to take public bus as many of school mates seem to enjoy it.

Learnt the hardway that kids cannot sit at the backseat of a bus - reserved for gangsters, nut jobs and school gangsters. You will never find a girl sitting on the backrow.

The wooden ladder was common along Bras Basah Rd, Arab Street & Hill Street, it is upstairs where they keep their stocks, if you run out of anything they just release the long steel chain & the ladder will come down and they go up to take whatever..this ladder thing was a common sight in most shop houses in commercial part of Singapore those days.

I usually buy my school books from Anthony Book Store ( you will roughly know where I come from heh heh heh), with the given school list, items forgotten or some that ABS doesn't carry I have to buy from what's that name famous Indian Book sellers along Bras Basah Road and Chinese books from World Book Store or shop at was it South Bridge Road, and certain particular English Text Book from Anthony Book Store where Marsh & Malennan Centre is today.

They used to have the dishes in wash basins (really) which turned me off. Then one day popped in and life was indeed sedap. The staff were very aloof but very happy and banter endlessly when those Chinese with Sumatran roots turned up. I thought I was intruding at a family meal. Used to get stuck with the cucumber salad.

The curry used to be sedap & their other dishes sedap..when they moved to Raffles City, it was expensive but still SEDAP! don't think it is...all 'watered down" da shiok! anymore!

Same for me, that morris minor that can fit, how many school boys?? or girls? there were no concern for insurance or accident back then, for people seldom speed & where the right & left signals with the light bulb doesn't come out the driver will shout to the person sitting next to the right or left to pull it up & push it back in. I can still recall my neighbor black color Morris Minor with the logo in front, I would sit on the passenger seat in front, I will be manning the left side indicator (:-

Yes, the beetle boots. Was told that a store at Plaza Singapura had it and got it there. Needed it badly as I was invited to a party in 3rd Avenue - atas so much act the part and be hip. Was so proud of the boots that I forgot how the party went, only remember ending up for the customary supper at the Shang.
