SINGAPORE: Faulty power cables caused the 20
September, 2011 Circle Line (CCL) disruption, which affected nearly 27,000
commuters.

In a statement, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said it has
completed its investigations into the train service disruption.

LTA said the faulty power cables had affected traction power to the trains.

It said checks were conducted on all direct current (DC) cables at Dakota station.
It was found that the deterioration of the defective cable was made worse by the
presence of water in some cable pits.

LTA then instructed its contractor to replace the damaged cable at Dakota station and to conduct checks on all DC
cables that were installed for the CCL.

The checks uncovered three other cables at risk which have since been replaced by the contractor.

LTA said subsequent laboratory tests conducted revealed certain manufacturing
defects in some batches of these cables as well as damage in some cables
sustained during the installation process.

While these defects do not immediately impede the functioning of the cables or affect MRT operations, LTA
will embark on a planned cable replacement programme to change the defective
cables for greater MRT service reliability.

LTA said checks will be done every three months to identify if any cables have deteriorated and, if so, they
will be changed immediately.

The full completion of the replacement programme is targeted for end-December 2015, and the costs will be borne by the
contractor.

As LTA's findings show that SMRT is not at fault for the damaged cable, no penalty will be imposed on the operator for this
incident.

Used to be "cleopatra saw"...the person(s) in charge of the supervision of the installation of the power cables, should be investigated, maybe having too many 'blow jobs', ' vins & spirits' & "karaoke"!

Of course it is never there fault...the 'butler did it', they didn't know, want good quality service, 'UPSIZE & UPGRADE'..PAY MORE!:p

We all know this is a wayang. How we know? You will notice that the probe passed the blame to the contractor and say they use substandard and defective cables. Therefore, SMRT will not be penalised. If that is so, why is there no word that the contractor will be penalised? Certainly, the contractor supplied cables that did not meet the prescribed standard has breached the construction agreement, certainly there must be some penaltie to the contractor. Why no mention of this? Why is the contractor not in court right now and being sued for breach of contract or even worse culpable negligence? The reason is that the contractor can and is able to produce records to show that these wires tested fine, and were therefore accepted for use by the SMRT as evidenced by the SMRT signing for them. If this was brought up in court, it will show that the findings of the COI were all wayang and made up to cover SMRT from their fault.

Bottom line is this. The whole MRT sytem is owned and operated by SMRT, when it breaks down the fault has to lie with them and the buck has to stop at them. Don't blame contractors, suppliers, cables, riders, rain, etc.

The COI will find that SMRT was not at fault because the door supplied by the contractor is defective. In addition, a little PRC boy was observed pissing by the door, and his pee short circuited the wiring for the door. henceforth, the contractor and the little boy will have their kukuchiao executed.

No one of sound mind would have expected an outcome whereby SMRT takes all the blame. This is uniquely S'pore.

Firstly, SMRT is to be blamed. They set the specs, they should QC when the system was built. So heads must roll - simple as that.

However, SMRT have the perogative to sue the contractor and suppliers (should have been stated in the contract on work performance).
