SINGAPORE: While many Singaporeans have taken up cycling for leisure, National Development Minister Khaw Boon said the real test is – will Singaporeans cycle to work?

At his meeting with reporters on Thursday morning, Mr Khaw spoke about how many Singaporeans these days are taking up cycling.

He related his own experience trying to cycle from home to work but said at some points it was tough because the infrastructure did not support it.

He said there must be facilities available to suit that lifestyle change.

And that is one reason why the government is looking at building park connectors. In future, all new towns will feature dedicated bicycle lanes.

This is of course also tied in to alleviating road congestion as people move to different modes of transport.

Mr Khaw also spoke about how lifestyles and aspirations may change with technology, and that the Singapore of today may be very different from the future.

Technology too plays a big part in this as Mr Khaw offered Singaporeans a glimpse into the future - driverless cars.

He added driverless cars will have huge impact on private transportation.

Driverless cars are already being tested in the US.

Mr Khaw gave the example as car prices continue to rise in Singapore with authorities aiming to get more Singaporeans to switch to public transport.

Cycle? And get squished by cement trucks? Thanks but no thanks.

In Singapore, cycling is for sport and leisure at East Coast Park or Changi Park.

LordElrond suggests the COW rides a motorcycle to work for a start.

I Was Right

Junction boxes are killers.

Last time, the SMRT was fuckin' yaya papaya telling us off that the MRT platforms are supposed to be exposed just like many countries. And now? SMRT lan lan had to put barricades on all exposed platforms to prevent accidents and suicides.

Re: I Was Right

i cycled to cbd on saturday for the half day of work in 2000 to 2002. i stop after company moved further away from home and i gave up cycling on the road after LHL printed ten of thousand of COEs to booast economy after SARS.

Got Brompton bicycle grant and safe roads to cycle on or not? If Singaporean become hum zim bang on the road, got give big money or not? Wahlao if get hit by 180kmh ferrari do not know whether police can find whole body or not. If you want us to cycle so why burn so much on new MRT lines and trains?

there isn't enough space or land to widen the roads now, where is he going to find space to cater for bicycles???
these days, our ministars suka suka suggest this, suggest that, take it as pure talk cork, fantasy and lack of 40/40 foresight....

you look at the MRT joker rules on bring bicycles on train. Basically cannot do it unless on weekends and off peak. So cyclists got to use the roads to get to work. Sure get killed by one of reckless truck drivers.

If PAP is serious, then propose a different bicycle path system, perhaps one that is on an elevated viaduct from major suburbs all the way into city area. Will be much cheaper than MRT, and can solve the road congestion problem. The current park connectors cannot make it because there is still a lot of traffic junctions and bridges in the way.

Chee-bye Cow,

Will you set an example by cycling to work yourself ?

He will need a traffic police convoy or he likely to be squished to road kill given how dangerous Singapore roads are today.

Still waiting for this Cow to comment on Palmergate. Why was he silent then? Can't makan the shit he threw out earlier?

Having him squished on the road means one rodent less in Sinkapore. Totally acceptable.

Cycling to work in a temperate climate is enjoyable, provided the roads don't have too many cars, trucks, etc. In a hot and humid climate like Sinkieland, it is dumb, even if the roads are clear. This Malaysian Khaw obviously has no Cow Sense!

SPOT ON!

You are absolutely correct but he has too many problems to solve but instead of settling those, he is now plucking out ridiculous ideas
