SINGAPORE - A Ferrari suddenly burst into flames when its owner was pumping petrol at a petrol kiosk in Havelock Road.

Pump attendant Prakash, 22, told The Straits Times that the driver was "plump" and in his 30s. The flames then spread to the driver's pants, but were put out quickly with a nearby fire extinguisher and he escaped unscathed.

The incident, which happened on Thursday night, began when the Ferrari drove into the petrol kiosk and and asked to fill up his tank.

Mr Prakash said he usually places a towel under the petrol tank before filling it up to prevent any leakage.

However, the Ferrari driver told him it was not necessary. Mr Prakesh started the job of filling the tank, but handed the pump to the driver to finish the job.

This was as there were too many cars to service.

When he turned back, there were flames coming out of the engine. CCTV footage later revealed that the driver had continued to pump petrol even after the auto-pump had stopped, causing petrol to leak out.

Mr Prahask speculated that it could have been the heat of the engine that set the fire off.

Ferrari should only be driven with a pit crew on stabdby machiam F1

Cars worth that much should be safer than ordinary cars. Then again, it is an Italian Job and frankly Italians have the flair but not much can be said about their quality.

I recalled my Alfa A33 that was not well-made and there is a wind noise after it reaches a certain speed, which means it was not airtight. My engine oil needs topping up every now and them. After a year I sold it off.

Why did you take the risk to buy an Italian one in the first place ? Toyota is good enough if you want something that works - reliable, crank and it runs smoothly every morning.

I had ALFA before......you get more problems than that...
overheating issues, hydraulics leaking (new car mind you), alternator issues.......practically anything and everything you can imagine.......and the car not that fast either.....useless piece of shit....stressed me out for the 2 years that i endured and was so relived after i got rid of it.

Having owned and driven many cars, The Italian brands are notorious in reliability and also very costly in maintenance as it spent most of it's life in the workshop.

I don't follow the Formula One races as I used to during Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell days. IMO. the Japs, specifically Honda was giving her competitors a real headache because they simply could not match the Honda engines. That was why they changed the racing engines to one being normal aspirated instead of turbocharged.

Since then Ferrari started winning and gained popularity. For the consumer market, they do make cars with powerful engines but i think they forgot that cars also need to stop.
