Running shoes for recommendation

I was worried about blisters initially but it turned out ok.

When my sandals got wet though, either because of puddles or rain, there was chafing where the straps came into contact with the feet. My solution is to have an alternative pair which has a different strap pattern.

In fact, even when I ran in shoes, I alternated between Adidas and NB because they wore down differently and hurt my feet differently. The idea is not to allow your footwear to hurt the same places repeatedly.


do you get blisters running in the sandals?
In the vibrams initially, I get some shafing on the tips of my longest toes which usually heals in a few days, but no more blisters now though the tips still feel abit tender a day after.

Seriously, if you changed the strapping pattern of the flip flops, they aren't too bad for running. But you have to be careful that you change from heel strike to mid or fore foot landing. You also have to find a suitable way of strapping your slippers - I've tried using the huarache style of strapping, with mixed results.

Police pT shoes the brand is POWER right..by bata..

Not sure about the brand too. Maybe Bata was the OEM manufacturer, that's surely possible. I threw them away after passing out. There's status symbol to be maintained in PA. Passed out to full constabulary, we wore all white for PT in PA. Only recruits wore that silly blue shorts and black canvass shoes.

Tat Sing is worst. Most streetfighters wearing Tat Sing slippers when in defeat and retreat, flipped their slippers and fled bare footed.

No Adidas and Nike, wear once, my feet sores, knn throwed my Adidas shoe to my storeroom, only wear it for outings, not for exercise.

I wear Thai slippers for casual strolls around the neighbourbood. My favourite is Adda but there're a lot of brands of similar price and quality range. In Thailand, best is to shop at Tesco Lotus. In Singapore, best is to shop at GM Phuean Thai. In any case or any brand, slippers are not meant for running.

I think a good pair of running shoes should have a proper rebound. When your body weight compresses the sole of the shoe, it stores energy to be released at a specific timing just like a spring. Better watch out for bad knees or injury due to running on hard tarmac like bitumen paved road for cars. Try the rowing machine or a thread mill machine which lessen the pressure on your knees. Losing them is as good as driving cars without tyres.
 
Whatever brand be it Nike/NB/Adidas/Asics/Reebok/Puma etc, they are all mostly from the same OEMs in China, Thailand or even Vietnam.
They simply change the brand name design and price it differently. You either opt for fashion, durability or comfort.
 
For running or even just jogging shoes, two supports are necessary for comfort and efficiency - sole and ankle. That disqualifies slippers which have no ankle support and in fact, the tip of your soles, i.e. your toes, have to drag the slippers along. Slippers are only good for casual strolling.

Once I went with WP to a Johor waterfall. Sylvia (herself police trained) remarked, you (i.e. me) could climb up the waterfall hill wearing sandals? I was still prime IPPT gold then and I acknowledged, it might look a silly thing to do, but I was still fit enough for that, in exchange of not getting feet wet in shoes, that could be soggy.

Used to run regularly 12 to 25 miles per week when I was younger, but it caused all kinds of pain e.g. shin splints, pain from running on hard surfaces.
I'm actually surprised that there are many avid runners out there. In Spore running is not that healthy: running on hard surfaces & breathing in all the vehicle exhaust. I think it's better to exercise on a treadmill or elliptical machine. In my case I have an old Nordictrack Classic Pro I got decades ago :)

Are you a heel-striker, i.e. do you land on your heels when you run? I was, and had the same problems that you mentioned. When I was in my mid-40s, I seriously looked for alternatives to running, and tried running on soft surfaces, etc. I even stopped for a period.

Then I was advised to change to mid-foot landing. I did (and initially overdid it) and my calves hurt like crazy. I was advised to rest them for 2 to 3 days and start again, this time, more modestly. I did and have not looked back. When you land on your mid or fore foot, your calves naturally absorb the shock of your landing - there's no need for spongy support. It also strengthens your calf and thigh muscles (which in turn help to protect your knees and ankles.)

I was also advised to switch to flatter running shoes - I eventually settled for sandals (with thin soles). I haven't to barefoot running yet but who knows.

Back then I was running with tennis shoes. :o At a store I got some advice from the salesman at a Footlocker to try New Balance shoes. New Balance shoes provide more support for someone who over pronates & after I got the NB shoes which fixed most of my problems, but never completely disappeared especially when I was doing 15+ miles per week. I was actually running around a hockey ring with sharp turns, so that explains why I was prone to shin splints. I like running around the hockey ring because it's like running in an aircon environment, very invigorating. I sometimes ran on a tartan track & that made a huge difference. Very bouncy & less painful

I only did indoor running because I prefer to run without my spectacles & there's no way you can do that without worrying about traffic. I was forced to cut down & eventually stop running because of an accident where I broke my leg(s). I did resume running but after the 2nd or 3rd operation I chose take it easy. After the 5th operation I was too busy to start running again.

From what I have been reading running may not be the best exercise. Walking with some resistance exercise may be better a better solution, especially for someone who has reached the uncle age:o

Over-pronation is a self-perpetuating problem when you are in unsuitable shoes - you over-pronate and wear out your soles unevenly, and because you wear out your soles unevenly, your over-pronation is worsened by the resulting shape of those soles. This is especially bad if you heel-strike and if you strike the ground hard because your thickly padded soles tempt you to.

When I run on thinner soles, I find myself being a lot more careful, and landing more softly, and almost always mid to fore-foot. In this way, the heels do not wear out as fast and solves the over-pronation problem.

There is another important thing about the mid / fore-foot landing style of running. Make sure you strengthen your calves and thighs during your warm-up. For me, it's at least 50 calf raises, 50 knee bends (5 sets of 10) and 50 ham-string curls. This will prepare your legs for the new loading pattern of your running.

As to whether running is the best exercise, it ultimately depends on the alternatives available to you and your preferences. I hate working out indoors and swimming is too much of a bother. So, I've stuck to running.

Many of us don't walk evenly. Just look at how uneven the wear of our shoes are. It takes alot of effort to run in a controlled manner. For many exercise is a chore to be done as quickly & efficiently as possible.
I like to do my exercises in the comfort of my room. A few body weight exercises, isometric exercises, & 30 minutes of skiing is good enough.

I'm planning to spend more time in LOS where being physically active is the norm i.e. more walking. Maybe get a bicycle & use it to get around.
