Angry Singaporeans are calling for boycott of local telco Starhub following the release of its controversial Starhub Euro 2012 promotion package targeting expats only.

Under the Starhub Euro 2012 promotion, it does appear that expats get a much more ‘exclusive’ deal than locals.

Though both locals and expats pay the same price (Early Bird Price) of S$58.85 w GST for the Euro 2012 package, expat subscribers get a much better deal in terms of an exclusive football premium pack of their choice which is worth $50 which includes a portable fan, mug and travel bag.

Locals who sign up for the same package gets only a complimentary Adidas EURO 2012 Miniball, but only if they sign up for the English Supersize Pack as well.

One irate Singaporean Doreen Choo posted on Starhub’s Facebook wall calling for an apology to Singaporeans:

Her call was echoed by many others:

“now tell me if this ain’t blatant discrimination against Singaporeans who happen to make up the bulk of your client base?!” – Henry Goh

“Unfair.! I am a loyal star hub customer, I signed up very early, foreigners paying the same price as me, but they get 50 dollars worth of free gifts.. Hmm.. Quite upset” – David Cheong

“Seriously Starhub, you are making a terrible mistake of yr life as a service provider. No comments for you. big big mistake.” – Lim Si Hao

“I urge all singaporeans to cancel their subscriptions with starhub. we shall then see if this arrogant telco can depend on expats alone. Starhub should understand it should not discriminate against locals because in the long term, it is the locals who actually determine if your business will survive with their support.” – Richard Teh

There are no immediate comments from Starhub which appears to have remove the discriminatory ads from its website.

pay per match would be nice. maybe $5 per match. i would watch a few England games.

If house at good open location, buy antenna better.

any chance that rtm 1 & 2 showing? will starhub block their signal?

fyi sg foc channel did NOT show the recent all-england badminton tornament but i was able to catch it on rtm 1/2.

I don't think RTM will show the Euros.. The Malaysians will also have to pay to watch the Euros on their Cable TV but I think theirs is much cheaper than ours..

Try buying a TV aerial booster antenna.. You can get one at those small electrical shops.. Toa Payoh central got few of those shops.. Cost less than $50.. I bought mine 2 years back for the World Cup.. Fixed it myself and the quality is quite good.. Of course it also depends on which floor you living at and your place of residence.. Tune it to the Indon channels and you'll get free football live games every week.. the Indons will show EPL and Champs Lge games.. I'm sure they'll also show the Euro games in June..

Their pre match previews are all in Bahasa but its just a little inconvenience for me.. What matters most is watching the match itself which as usual will be commentated by the usual British football commentators..

Why would anyone bother to subscribe when all matches can be watched live on hahasport.com, oleoletc.com and a few other live broadcast sites? Not just football, it streams snooker, tennis and many other obscure sports as well.

And you are welcome.

starhub say sorry for its ang mo tua kee package already

Hot on the heels of a public outcry over a three-fold increase in Euro 2012 subscription packages, Starhub has admitted conceding an "own goal" in its latest promotional deal.
The "Expat Exclusive" promotion, which started earlier this month, offered gifts worth $50 to European expats who signed up for Starhub's UEFA Euro 2012 television package.
These gifts include a mug, a travel bag, a portable fan and a six-can cooler bag.
Specifically, it targeted fans from England, France, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands. According to a report in the Straits Times, the promotion was marketed directly to the expatriate fans through their clubs and association publications.
The deal, which is no longer on offer, comes after Starhub priced its Euro 2012 package at $69.55 — more than three times it charged for the last Euro.
Long-time Starhub subscriber Marie Lim said she felt "under-valued and a little betrayed" by its latest marketing gimmick.
She added: "I think it is only right that if there is going to be any promotion, then local customers who have been with Starhub a long time should benefit first."
In response to mounting criticism, the telecommunication company posted an apology on its Facebook page, apologising "for any ill-feelings caused to our customers by the UEFA Euro 2012 expatriate promotion".
It added that the promotion was an example of "segment marketing" and was targeted at "different customer groups based on their unique needs and interests".
But it conceded that the promotion has backfired. "We now realise that we have scored an own goal. We deserve a red card for this."
As a peace-making gesture, it will now offer the goodies to the first 2,000 customers, regardless of nationality, who sign up for the package.
But the goodwill move cut no ice with most Singaporean fans contacted by Yahoo! Singapore.
England fan Terrence Chuan said "the damage has already been done no matter what Starhub do now".
Still, the 31-year-old accepted that "making the promotion available to all fans is better than nothing".
Likewise, Germany supporter Evelyn Mak said "Starhub should have known better than to come up with such a promotion". She also chided the company for using "insensitive" words such as 'expat exclusive'" in their marketing material.
But there were others who were more sympathetic. Sales engineer Wong Choon Seng said: "Starhub is free to do any promotion it wants. This time it is for expatriates but I'm sure there will be something for local fans in future."
The Euro 2012 pack, which will show all 31 matches live, is available at $58.85 for fans who sign up before the end of this month. Thereafter, it will cost $69.55.
It is also the first programme to come under the Media Development Authority's "cross-carriage" rules, which means non-Starhub subscribers will also get the to watch the matches, but at an additional activation fee of $10.70.
