Tharman - "We took (or is it 'take') our incumbency for granted in the past"

Confuseous

The People's Action Party (PAP) in the past had been too "in-your-face" and had taken its incumbency "for granted", Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said yesterday. And while the PAP will evolve, it is also a question of how Singaporeans evolve in their political thinking.

Mr Tharman made this point during a question-and-answer session at the Kent Ridge Ministerial Forum - attended by about 200 undergraduates - held at the National University of Singapore.

During the session, an undergraduate asked what the PAP could do to overcome what he observed as greater "cynicism" towards Government policies among a population which is becoming increasingly educated. An "overly sympathetic press" was cited by the student as one of the factors for the cynicism.

I like this minister best of all the MIWs.

It's human nature to take things for granted when there is no real competition.

It's the same in politics, business, sports or human relationships.

A hefty PAP loss in GE2016 will change that.

Who knows, maybe when LKY finally kicks the bucket, the PAP splits, and there will be some nice competition.

No political hegemony or dynasty lasts forever.

Everything is impermanent and transient.

So what is he going to do about it? will he implement policies to benefit singaporeans? i believe he is just paying lip service as all pap ministers do

The first gen leaders had some fiercely independent minds. They disagreed with Lau Lee but accepted collective responsibility. People like Goh KS, Toh CC, Raja, KM Byrne, Eddie Barker, Ong Eng Guan, Lim Kim San..

2G and 3G leaders were all appointed and anointed by the 1G leaders. So more beholden and compliant. Even tho son said he was in charge, nobody believed him. Maybe now when that Old Man is too weak and feeble to get up from his coffin. But dunno who will listen to whom.

These Scums In White need an almighty kick up their backsides so that they'll not be Yaya anymore.. An Opposition win in Alunied is a good start but its just not enough to teach this Pappies Bastards a good lesson.. These White Scums are just too complacent.. More Oppos should be Voted in 2016.. The More the Better..

He is probably the only one that is earning less after being a Minister.

Actually LHL said before, pple like Shanmugan(lawyer), Vivian(Dr), Ng Eng Hen(Dr) are earning less as minister

And since Heng Swee Keat sat on the same post as Tharman before joining, by extension he also took a pay hit.

The rest are from civil service and Military so my guess is probably pay went up

Don't think Vivian, Tharman and Heng took a cut.
Hen and Shan probably did.
