Confuseous

To me the biggest failure is that too many elderly people are cleaning tables at food courts or washing public toilets instead of playing with their grandchildren at home.

In worse cases, they collect used cardboards for sale or sleep in street corners.

Retirement age is 65 and the government has said it wants to raise it to 69.

But, an extensive practice of bosses replacing workers once they reach 50 with younger, cheaper people – particularly foreigners – has made retirement age a bit redundant.

Many Singaporeans believe that the government should use the city’s huge reserves to take care of the older generation which had contributed much to build this country.

Some have appealed for a minimum wage structure, which is vehemently rejected.

“Instead of investing them in foreign ventures we use the reserves to provide S$200-S$300 (RM488-RM730) a month to every citizen once they reach retirement age,” suggested a reader.

That is unlikely to happen.

I was with my boss having lunch at Redhill Food Centre the other day. We saw a lot of old folks(looks like in their 60s -70s) sitting around doing nothing, talking cock, playing chess at the Pavilion right next to Shop N Safe. His immediate reaction was why is the government allowing this. Why doesn't the government allow/encourage these pple to continue working. If they can continue working, we won't need so many foreigners in SG. Just look at Japan. They don't need as many foreigners because a lot of the services are handled by old folks

On the other side of the equation U got pple like the one in the article complaining about old folks working.

Its all about balance. I think old folk working few times a week or a few hours a day is fine. LKY is a good example :)

It is a national shame to even allow old folks to work when they should be taking it easy and doing what they enjoy.

Stop trying to extend the official retirement age or milking them dry of every drop of economic value to boost this plastic shithole's economy.

first you have to know why older japanese are still working

1) they love their job and love what they are doing ........................those old ppl in singapore love their job ?

2) some of those japanese older ppl are bosses ..they are guarding their 3 or 4 generation biz

3) many older japanese dont work for money ..they have the money .

I'm surprise your boss's IQ is worse then retard.
You better start looking for another job.

Nothing wrong. But do not pay them well and provide them with good equipment to raise productivity. Your government cannot be trusted. They are just taxpayer bandits.

Even bigger failures, asking strangers to clean the shits you left behind.

Why can't you clean your own table?

Old farts should be recycled.

Cleaning Companies Are Worst Than Loan Sharks...

These are the Scums of the Society who exploit these elderly

workers by bidding low and oppressing elderly with low wages ...

Not to mentioned "under-table" money from employment agents who

supply these scums with foreign workers !!!

Without a minimum wage law, there can only be exploitation.

Do you and your boss know why the foreigners are here? They are here so that the infrastructure can be utilised to the maximum and the gdp will increase. It's not because there are lots of good jobs available or jobs that are suitable for the elderly and the foreigners are needed to fill them because there are no willing Singaporeans. Except perhaps in construction, which I really hope your "brilliant' boss does not expect the old folk to do.

As for those old folk who choose to spend their time talking cock or playing chess, what business is it of your boss or the government?

In Spore we have multi-billionaires guarding the family secrets. We may find out more with the death of the last leaf:p

If old folks clean toilets and tables to pass time, that's fine. If they do so to ensure they don't starve, then something's wrong. My friend sends his mum to work as a cleaner in a SME. His mum steady poon pi pi arrive at work place in a Jaguar (latest model). Mum's boss drives an Accord. His mum refused to stay at home even though allowances from children almost 5k a month.

Totally agree with you . If old ppl work for the sake of putting food on the table ..then something is very wrong .

When I was in my twenties, I was so confident of Sinking land, when I was in my thirties, my confidence halved. Now in forties, no regrets leaving Sinking land. If don't go, one day I might be the Ah Pek cleaning your table at the hawker centre.

This is so true, really the biggest failure of PAP in taking care of a country until so many elderly citizens even in their 70s to 80s need to work as cleaners.

I fully agree with you.

Way back in 1995, I was told by the CEO of LKH, one of S'pore's biggest contractors that old fart had given the go-ahead to develop infrastructures to accommodate 6.5m people.
