Foldable seats can boost MRT efficiency
Today Online. Letter from Brandon Eng 04:45 AM Mar 26, 2012 http://www.todayonline.com/Voices/EDC120326-0000043/Foldable-seats-can-boost-MRT-efficiency
WHY are our Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) trains not equipped with foldable seats to accommodate more passengers during peak periods, when seats could be left folded to free up space?
Commuters would be happier to get onto the train to stand than to wait for another train.
From an MRT operations perspective, it would be more efficient because it means more commuters per trip and, at the same time, happier customers.
This could be done without having to purchase more trains and could be implemented sooner, too.
Having foldable seats sends an indirect message to people to make space for fellow commuters during peak periods.
And we could count on peer pressure to get commuters to stand rather than sit when the train is packed.
