Foldable seats can boost MRT efficiency

Today Online. Letter from Brandon Eng 04:45 AM Mar 26, 2012 http://www.todayonline.com/Voices/EDC120326-0000043/Foldable-seats-can-boost-MRT-efficiency

WHY are our Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) trains not equipped with foldable seats to accommodate more passengers during peak periods, when seats could be left folded to free up space?

Commuters would be happier to get onto the train to stand than to wait for another train.

From an MRT operations perspective, it would be more efficient because it means more commuters per trip and, at the same time, happier customers.

This could be done without having to purchase more trains and could be implemented sooner, too.

Having foldable seats sends an indirect message to people to make space for fellow commuters during peak periods.

And we could count on peer pressure to get commuters to stand rather than sit when the train is packed.

The answer lies in more trains and not foldable seats.

How many Singaporeans willing to give up seat and stand? Not unless, SMRT locked the seats up during peak hours and unlocked them for seating during off peak.

Truly daft idea. Why wld anybody stand when there's a seat?

Why not remove all seats during crunch hr?

PS. Of cos, some will bring their own bangkus.

The only way is to reduce the population to an acceptable level. All other solutions are merely smokescreens. Let me ask you, increasing the frequency of trains can help? There has to be a certain gap between each of the trains. Therefore, not much room to work with.

decentralise .....look into how more people can work from home.

Can, I tell you. Just drive the trains faster, and reduce time at stations. Currently, doors are opening too slowly in my opinion.

now now....

just post in the forum on what should be done this and that and yet do nothing in real life.

the sinkie concept of getting things done...outstanding..!!!

Should be ... How many FTs willing to give up seat ....

Worst of all, locals or FT's all pretend to be napping on seats meant for pregnant ladies or the older generation. I suggest LTA to hire some old people accompanied by an official and stand in a crowded train next to them. Take pictures and display their faces on noticeboards in MRT stations and shame them publicly. Only this sort of action will wake them up.

haha ya...wake them up in more ways than one.

hi there

1. bro, bingo!
2. honest, the situation cannot be solved by just that.
3. daft and bird brain or brainless.
4. it is the influx of commuters that the trains are so packed during crunch hrs.
5. with seats or seatless, sheep just cannot get it right!
