Nuclear Weapons Uncovered In Libya

This may be the Mother Of All Jokes! If true, why Qaddafi not let it be known and prevent any incursions by telling NATO he has them? NATO will think twice before attacking were they to know he has nuclear weapons and will use them if necessary.

(AGI) Tripoli - The outgoing premier of Libya's NTC, Mahmoud Jibril, has announced that nuclear weapons were found in the country. It was reported by TV network Al Arabiya. Muammar Gaddafi officially gave up his nuclear weapons program in 2004 in a bid to strengthen Libya's ties with the West. Jibril also said that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will provide further details on the weapons found in the next few days. . .

If this was truth. Then M. Gadaffi really stupid. Should have keep the nuke and bomb the Israel/Europe country that bomb him.

Libya's acting Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril has announced that nuclear and chemical weapons have been found in the country and said foreign inspectors would arrive later in the week to investigate the issue, Al Arabiya TV network reported on Monday quoting a National Transitional Council official.

The official said, the country is in close contact with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to define the composition of the exact materials of the weapons.

“By making this announcement, we reaffirm that the new Libya is a peaceful Libya, a Libya that abides by international law, a Libya that aims for development before anything else for the good of its people,” Jibril said.

Jibril said Libya has no interest in keeping such weapons. He refused to give further details on the location and amount of the weapons. “There are international organizations taking care of this issue,” Jibril said.

A Russian-drafted U.N. resolution, to be voted on this week, calls on Libyan authorities to destroy its chemical weapons.

The late Muammar Gaddafi officially gave up his nuclear weapons program in 2004 to strengthen Libya’s ties with the West.

Is he too fucking kind and soft? 太软弱仁慈不舍得让敌人死？His fucking nukes won't work? Dumb ammo?

It's not that hard to make a nuclear bomb if you have basic national resources and funding. The trouble with nukes is that you must be able to deliever it to your targets. That's why US and allies are most concerned about missile testing with missiles looking like capable of carrying and delivering nukes over long distances. If a country doesn't have that, the most they can do with nukes is to blow up themselves. The era of aircraft carrying nukes is over. The ballistic missile reigns supreme.

I quite disagree. Ballistic is too predictable too easy to defend against, calculate orbit of a detected threat and launch an interception according to the ballistic projection, you will neutralise that threat already. These days they use cruise missile instead of ballistic, because tracking and intercepting these are 100X harder.

Aircraft carrying dumb nuke like the Fat Boy & Little Boy of Heroshima & Nagasaki was over a long time ago. But yet strategic aircraft carrying nuke cruise missile is a very important element today. Because the aircraft don't need to fly over their targets and main purpose is to carry a (counter-strike) asset in the air where it survive and have speed and flexibility to dodge enemy destruction. Strategic bombers are airborne with their assets and leave bases once there is indication of engagement. Once in the air enemy would have a hard time to defend against them, and have to worry from where and at when would these warhead come at their ass. Strategic bombers can fly around globe with mid-air refuel and can be in the air for e.g. 2 weeks.

Subs are the other strategic assets, also mainly count on cruise missiles. Cruise goes slower, but can go low and terrain track their way to targets. No predictable path to intercept. Range of cruise will get drastic improvement. Subs can move much lower than bombers. But they can hide for very long time under. Bombers needs refuel in the air. Subs can stay below for many months without any re-supply, make oxygen from water by electrolysis. Sub can be also un-maned like bombers. That means subs can persist a very long lasting threat that you will be nearly impossible to eliminate. You may have won the war, but get a surprising revenge from bottom of ocean after your celebrated victory.

Sub launched nukes are also basically ballistic missiles. It's not that easy to defend against as you described. The sub as carriage for nukes is the the most preferred among all nuclear powers now over the aircraft. An aircraft however big has about 6 hours airtime, requiring taking off and landing facilities at both ends. A sub has about 6 months undersea time lurking somewhere nobody knows where.
