Like the DPM in 1990's to bring who to what court over the CLOB remember...you think, Vivien have the "balls"...aiyah! only good at trying to fix, you know what...
Didn't some ASEAN country contributed billions of $$ to Indonesia, especially kawan SINgapura some years ago to control the, "slash & burn"???
Giving money to Indonesia to control the "slash and burn"?? Seriously?? By the time the money filters through the rungs of corrupt national, provincial and municipal officials, all that's left will hardly be enough to buy fire hoses. The corruption problem there is so bad that no President who took the reins since Suharto has been able to do anything about it.
As for what Vivian can do -- seriously speaking, the RIGHT THING to do is to either (a) summon the Indonesian ambassador and issue a strong statement that enough is enough and we are fed up after so many years, or (b) file an international lawsuit in the Hague.
Providing firefighters to the Indonesians will NOT solve the problem. How many firefighters does Singapore have? We are not talking about a small patch of grass here. The forest fires are ranging across hundreds of thousands of acres of land. The solution to the problem is tougher enforcement against the farmers and the corrupt foreign companies that perpetuate this mess, and NOT frantically trying to provide firefighters -- this will like putting a band-aid over a gaping wound!!
Maybe Vivian is afraid of reprisals from the Indonesians, or maybe he is afraid of escalating the matter further.
But that is NOT an excuse. As the responsible minister, confronting the Indonesians is the RIGHT THING TO DO and it is why we, the taxpayers, pay him millions. Our government should stand up for Singapore, not meekly kowtow to those who are causing us problems which affect our quality of life!!
