Warning signs of unhappy sentiments against foreigners

SINGAPORE - Last week, the National Inter-school ‘A’ division badminton finals featured a showdown between Jurong Junior College (JJC) and Raffles Institution (RJC). What was supposed to be a simple final duel between 2 schools ended up being polarized into a Singapore versus China showdown. How did that happen? The boys’ and girls’ teams from RJC consisted of Singaporeans, while the girls’ team line-up from JJC wholly consisted of Chinese nationals. Of the 7 members in the JJC boys’ team, 4 were from China, 1 from South Korea and 2 were Singaporeans.

JJC made history with its first appearance in a badminton final. However, the line-up of its teams came under heavy criticism, and there were hints of unhappy sentiments. Vice-captain of the Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) badminton team, John Low, echoed the sentiments of his team:”‘It’s unfair and we do feel a little resentful.” RJC coach Hamid Khan agreed with Low’s unfair assessment, adding that there should have been a cap in the number of foreign players allowed to participate. Others felt that a cap in number of foreign players would have the advantage of improving sporting standards without adversely affecting the participation of local players. The polarized contest between Singapore and China was summed up by Lim Boon Tiong, an RJC reserve player:”A lot of us feel like we’re playing for Singapore, not just Raffles”.

The resentment went to the level that even supporters from ACJC cheered on RJC. This is a thought that any ACSian in his right frame of mind would never ever entertain given the rivalry between ACS and Raffles. The fact that the former cheered for the latter just showed how polarized the contest is, which transcended inter-school rivalries.

Such unhappy sentiments were reminiscent of those expressed in the wake of the open door policy, which opened the floodgates for waves of foreign employees into our work force. These sentiments were expressed occasionally in our very own Straits Times forums, and online in blogs and other popular Internet forums. Like those who were concerned over the badminton showdown between JJC and RJC, there were repeated calls to exercise a strict cap or quota on the number of foreign employees a company can hire. Like local badminton players losing out on the opportunity to represent their school, local employees fear losing their rice bowls to foreign employees. If the calls remained unheeded, such unhappy sentiments against foreigners will rear its ugly head. The events at the badminton final provided a stark reminder to all.

Bad news for Singapore's future of our youngsters are so weak that they can't take a bit of competition

They want to be spoonfed by the government

They want to be like American, lazy, don't want to work but sign sign sign credit card and rack up huge debts

All the more we should import more high-quality PRC

Really I am not joking, our youngsters are very weak

I see it everyday. Where the PRC puts himself to hard work the Singaporean puts himself to hard complaining

There are now about 500,000 PRC in Singapore. I think ideal would be 1,000,000 or about 20% of population

We need to upgrade our stock of human capital

Uncle cheapo .... your eating house upgrade to aluminium chairs leow bo?

Besotted doesnt need aluminium chairs lah.

Since he love PRC so much, he needs whole restaurant made in China. Bamboo chairs are the way to go.

Oh, and he should go the whole hog. Serve all-China made food ingredients, including SARs-filled civet cats and Chinese milk.
:p:p:p

Come to think of it, besotted himself should be replaced with a PRC entrepreneur.

You are quite perceptive

I plan to train a few of those with potential to run restaurants in an expanded chain, they will have significant share, and when I am older they can take over completely

It is a privilege to work with hardworking trustworthy PRC staff

Who to blame for the failures in the Spore system

Must blame the puppet master & his ideas on social engineering.

Those who need to be spoonfed can be found in the gov't or GLCs. Spore has one of the highest emigration rates & that should tell you something.

Pointless thinking that you can just refresh the population stock because the same problem will happen again.

On one hand, I symphatise with JJC for losing, however on the other hand, I applaud RJC for their win. It shows that there are actually local talents and you can achieve result by nurturing these locals (at least by giving them an opportunity) & using the right mix of foreigners when appropriate.

Imagine the local students already feel like that, I cannot imagine the resentment level of local adults against the foreigners. The govt should regulate the influx of foreigners. I think it has reached a level where there is more harm than good.

sinkie govt has totally no clue of what it takes to allow foreigners to come in. Low birth rate is caused by high cost. instead of addressing the real issue, they use a lousy way to deal with it.

Oh... PRC are hardworking and trustworthy. Wait till they turn against you, you will know how powerful they are. They don't even care about the well-being of their countrymen, only think of money and profits, that's why there is poisonous milk made in China. Worse is that these milk is spreading throughout the world. Yah, trustworthy group of people with no hearts.

You can apply that description to PAP and Dirty Harry. It's the same.

I presumed RJC lost.

Welcome to the real world. Sooner or later, Singaporeans are going to face competition from people all over the world.

You mean dilute our singie stock.

Yours is understandably, from business (or production) cost perspective. Already our social landscape has changed, every other food court is manned by PRC. Not just waiting tables, but even messing up my char kuay teow (mind my cockles).:p

Whatever the merits, business costs or social engineering... mind the social backlash. And so evident, not just here in this forum:rolleyes:

In Australiaand most Angmo countries only take in creams de la. that really can contribute to their economy..professional and special skilled people ,,,ie very specific, selective..and controlled.........
we had a very minute local pop base at 3.5M,,,taking in 250,000 new PRs and New citizen over the last couple of years and now ADD another 1.2 M foreign workers.........the rate and proportion is really LIGHTNING SPEED AND ASTROMICAL PROPORTION!!!!!!!..it really impact tremendously ionto the 95% of low and middle class locals..........JUST telling the locals to loce, embrace them with open arms is NOT easy...
WHY? if ViVian can try to take bus..mrt everyday..eat only in hawkers centre..live in HDBs...he will see the great jam in buses n mrts...the rude and uncouth manners of these new immigrants and foreign workers..and the many flesh trades PRC hanging around the HDBs and local shopping enclaves..massage parlours in local shopping centres...
so our gabmen must experience what the commonfolks experience and feel EVERYDAY..then they can understand the frustration,,rejection mentality..resentments ...

if Singaporeans spend half as much energy on being productive as they do on complaining, there will be no worries about competition

anyway, most of the jobs that the FT do the locals don't want

then complain for what

bad attitude, don't want to work hard, want high pay

i think we should let in even more foreigners, especially PRC and Burmese

these are the best
