SINGAPORE: A University undergraduate filmed himself having sex with women he met on Tinder, without obtaining their consent.
Joel Chan York Yee, 26, pleaded guilty on Tuesday (Oct 25) to two charges of recording intimate videos without consent. Another two charges will be considered in sentencing.
The court heard that Chan met an 18-year-old woman on dating application Tinder in October 2020.
They began chatting on social media platforms including Instagram and Telegram, before agreeing to meet up for sex.
On Oct 23, 2020, the victim went to the university dormitory where Chan stayed and they had consensual sex there, the prosecutor said.
During the encounter, the victim realised that Chan's phone camera was facing them. She asked Chan if he was recording them having sex, and he said no.
The victim took the phone and placed it under a pillow before continuing.
Later that day, Chan asked her several times if he could record them having sex, but the victim declined.
They went for dinner, and Chan asked the victim to be his girlfriend, but she rejected him. He replied that he would no longer contact her if she rejected him.
After that, the victim realised Chan had unmatched her from Tinder and that she no longer had access to his Instagram account.
Chan then met another woman, a 20-year-old student, on Tinder. Sometime before Nov 15, 2020, the student met Chan at his residence and they had consensual sex.
Without the woman's consent, Chan recorded a video of them having sex. On Nov 15, 2020, Chan went to the victim's place of residence and had consensual sex with her.
He recorded a video of the act without obtaining the victim's consent. The video captured the victim's private parts.
Court documents did not indicate how the case came to light.
On Tuesday, the judge called for a mandatory suitability report and adjourned sentencing to December.

SINGAPORE— A possible third victim who is not an NUS student has come forward to talk about her experiences with a Resident Assistant who had been expelled from the National University of Singapore (NUS) following accusations of sexual assault.

Earlier last week, The Parrot published a story about a case of campus assault— the details of which have yet to be revealed due to the case being under police investigation.

A possible third victim, who will not be named, had made a public Instagram story post alleging that she had a “similar” experience as the one our story had described.

She told us about their correspondence and eventual one-time meeting.:

“I met him on Tinder in October. He asked me to go over to his place at Prince George’s [Park Residences]. He sent me a picture of the [digital] bus pass. He deleted the entire telegram conversation, I think he was trying to get rid of everything. ​

We had sex. The layout of his room… it’s really small but the bed is next to a table and halfway through, I saw a toilet paper roll with a phone propped up or leaned up against it. ​

The back camera had been facing me. I kinda stopped and he asked me what I was looking at.​

I told him ‘Your phone.’ ​

He got quiet for a bit and he told me not to look at it and that it was not recording. ​

I took his phone, it was on his lock screen, it didn’t show that it was recording or anything but it felt really suspicious. I didn’t think much of it.”​

When asked about the likelihood of a jailbroken phone being in the room that day, she told us she was aware of the existence of third-party apps for smartphones.

“Android has those third-party apps that let you do weird things to your phone. And his phone was very obviously at a recording angle.” she said.

However, it should be noted that Android phones do not need to be jailbroken to possess a secret recording application— several applications on the Google Play Store allow a user to record stealthily without having to stay in the camera app.

“The second time we wanted to have sex again, he said he would agree on the condition that he be allowed to record everything. ​

I told him no, that it wasn’t my thing.​

But he kept asking me, kept asking me,” the woman told us.​

Yet, the Resident Assistant allegedly asked the woman “at least 15-20” times if he could record her, assuring her that he would delete the intimate video the “next morning”.​

“He was trying to convince me. I hid his phone under the pillow because I felt that even if I had said no, he would’ve done it anyway.”

After intercourse, the Resident Assistant was described as “very hostile” after his alleged fruitless attempts at convincing the woman to allow him to film sex acts.

“I could tell he was kinda off, and asking me to move away from him.” ​

Though the woman had wanted to leave, she had agreed to accompany the Resident Assistant, prior to meeting him, to dinner.

“I felt bad, so I did.

After dinner, he seemed happy. He implied that he wanted something more with me, saying he wanted a girlfriend, and if I didn’t want to date him, he was never going to see me again,” she said.

“He asked me to move in with him before I even met him and to date him after just meeting once and it just felt… obsessive.” she added.

When asked about how she felt about the incident retroactively, she told us that she had gone weeks and months without thinking about it until hearing about the same Resident Assistant being expelled.

“I feel lucky to have maybe caught him in the middle of filming, because I’m pretty sure there may be other victims who don’t know or realize it. Thinking about it now, I do feel violated and disgusted. ​

His phone wouldn’t be propped up like that facing me for no reason.”​

Prince George’s Park Residences is a student housing estate located on the eastern side of NUS Kent Ridge campuses, and houses 3000 international and local university students.

Residential Assistants are provided accommodation free-of-charge in exchange for carrying out administrative responsibilities such as assisting in “maintaining a safe and secured residential environment within the residence”, and referring “misconduct to the appropriate authorities”.

The police and NUS have yet to release a statement.
