Truck driver jailed, banned
By Elena Chong
A FORMER tipper truck driver who beat the red light and caused the death of a motorcyclist was jailed for 10 months and banned from driving for eight years on Wednesday. Lim Hai alias Lim Chai Huat, 68, had pleaded guilty to causing the death of Malaysian Koh Beng Kang, 33, through dangerous driving at the junction of Tuas South Avenue 3 and Tuas Aggregate Terminal on Dec 5.
The court heard that on reaching the signalised T-junction, Lim wanted to make a right turn into Tuas South Avenue 3 but noticed that the traffic light was red. Despite this, he went ahead and turned, hitting Mr Koh's motorcycle in the process.
The motorcyclist fell off his bike, was entangled with the tipper truck and dragged for a distance. He was pronounced dead about 20 minutes later. Lim's lawyer Looi Wan Hui said that his client, who had hypertension and heart disease, had attended to the motorcyclist and called the police. Lim could have been jailed for up to five years for dangerous driving.
