I knew one guy, an ah siah kia who purposely failed his a levels so that he would have only 1 stripe and only serve 2 years.
He then took his a levels again as a private candidate.

Now that's one thinking soldier, I salute him!

If I have the choice I will not be voting for TT BUT 2.5 years NS was not his policy. It preceded him and stayed on for a while after him. I don't know if he had any part in the subsequent reduction to two years.

so, r u correcting for the sake of correcting, or r u agreeing or disagreeing on the issue of 2.5yrs NS while TT was the man in-charge?

if somebody in the earlier days proved their worth to be an officer or NCO (back in those days), and they saw 2.5yrs NS coming their way, it's their choice. but extending NS from 2yrs to 2.5yrs for other ranks bcos they underwent post secondary edu is retarding their entry to university & career opportunities.

be reminded that enlistment back then wasnt in sync with university intake windows. meaning to say, servicemen had to disrupt NS mid-way to enter uni, finish their degree, come back to complete the remaining term in NS... or, they complete NS, wait for the next uni intake the following yr.

I would salute him for his guts if he was from a poor family.
In his position, I condemn him.

In my 6 yrs as a Spec, i've come across more than one hokkien peng who has to support his family financially and when their enlistment papers came through, they still lan lan suck it up to go through BMT and NS.

Whatever failings ah sia boy have, he still went through the whole thing and not some goddamn Malaysian doctor who slipped through the cracks, made a citizen and now a 'respected' member of parliament. To make things worse, a former Chief of Army who once commanded tens of thousand of NSFs and regulars can tell you that NS is not important and endorse his colleauge's new citizenship and entry into the house.

See my point bro?

No he didn't, TCH was MINDEF when the reduction was made. And how coincidentally, a certain 2LT Lee Hongyi was serving his NS when the reduction in NS was made. What a coincidence.

Well true, ah siah kia did serve his 2 years, and kudos to him for that, albeit he served it quite lazily. :o

But I would still respect him for his guts if he was poor. The fact that he was rich merely made him a little "xiao chongming", not brave.
