These questions greatly humbled Job, as it humbles us all. With all of the advancements of science in the last two centuries, man can’t even cure the common cold.
All my Sammyboy thread users,
This is a new thread I am starting - Today’s Scripture Reading. The purpose of this thread is to encourage one another among born-again Christians (and non-Christians too are encouraged to read too). I fully respect your right to comment on this thread but my most humble request is that no abusive language, insult or any offensive language should be used to offend on another or faith of other religions. In the face of the daily challenges – diseases, economic downturns, family issues, personal relationship problems, etc. we need the power of God of the Bible to sustain us. Jesus is all-powerful and we can trust Him to provide us the strength to conquer all uncertainties. Finally, my sincere apologies again, and if this thread is ‘offensive’ to you - please skip or just ignore it.
Today’s Scripture Reading:

These things I command you, that ye love one another. [John 15:17]
We have just witnessed the bombing of 2 hotels in Jakarta. The victims of family members are surely saddened by the death of their love ones – many of them have achieved outstanding career. The world is currently not at peace and no single person should solely be held responsible for the current sorry state of the world affair. This is the problem of the world at large and everyone should take some responsibilities in one way or another. Since the fall of creation after Adam and Eve, nations are at war with one another for the last 4,000 to 5,000 years. All we can do now is to pray that through our love and the realization that only real love can bring peace, such events will not cease. Let’s collectively pray for love, peace, understand and tolerance. Jesus is here to help and through the Holy Spirit, we can succeed. God bless you.

Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. [Matthew 11:28-30]
We live in very uncertain times and we all know that nothing is constant. However there is an exception and that is ‘change’. This is the only constant we face everyday. For better or for worse, we have to cope with these changes as they come along. We must realize however that we are not alone. We have our Heavenly Father who understands our thoughts, our pains, our emotions and all that is within us. He will give us rest and comfort. Let’s put our trust in Him and He will give you strength to cope with the changes. Needless to say that there are some changes that bring positive results and when such things happen, always remember to give thanks to our Savior, Lord Jesus.

…except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. [Luke 13:3]
One of the most important doctrines in the Bible is the doctrine of repentance. It is, however, one of the least preached topics in the church. This is because few like to hear about it. Repentance is more than just say sorry to God. It is turning away from all sin. That’s a very difficult thing to do.
When it comes to wrong doings – whether they are against men or against God – I am one of the greatest culprits. Several months ago, the Holy Spirit led me to search of my past wrong doings and sin. I did and I started to recall them from the time I started working. I just couldn’t believe – there were so many people that I had offended and sinned against and their names came down to me like telephone directory from A to Z! Many of the wrong doings (or sin) that I have committed were due to jealousy, hatred, pride and covetousness. I recalled that there were also many sin that I have committed that due to worldly desire of greed and lust. In my most humble admission, I since then tried earnestly to repent and consciously avoid making similar wrong doings (or sin). I must say that I have failed now and then but God is gracious – He gives me opportunity every day to repent. In your prayer, please continue to remember me and ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen me so that I can live a life fully pleasing to him.

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? [Matthew 27:56]
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. [John 19:30]
These few words – “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me”, and “It is finished” were spoken by Jesus when He was hung on the cross. When He was hanging on the cross, Jesus carried all the known sins of the world up to His time and also sins of the future that men would create. Men are atrociously clever in inventing sin. God, the Father demands 100% purity and He could not bear to see His only Son being contaminated by all these sins (past, present and future) so much so that God the Father temporarily turned away from His Son. Before Jesus took the last breathe, He cried out “It is finished”. Jesus has paid the final price for us by offering Himself as a sacrifice fully acceptable to God, the Father.
We are therefore free now. However, we must not use our freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God and pray continuously for God’s wisdom to live a life fully acceptable to Him.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. [Psalm 1:1]
The word ‘blessed’ is used many times in the Bible. It denotes happiness, joy, thankfulness and divine favor from God. This verse tells us to choose friends carefully. If we, as born-again Christians, are not careful with friends, little by little we can fall into the worldly sins. At all cost, avoid people who have the habit of telling lies, frequent unwholesome entertainment outlets, using curse words, telling coarse jokes especially using jokes to mock at God.
We have to understand the principle that certain things corrupt, they tear down and destroy while other things build, develop, make fruitful, and give the capacity and means for happiness through trust and fellowship with God. We must therefore be mindful that we should choose those friends who will help us (and we too will help them) to build and develop closer relationship with God because happiness has to do with God and without Him nothing will satisfy us.
Let’s remember always: Jesus is very concerned with the way we live and nothing can please Him more than when we choose to live and obey His commandments.

For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. [Mark 10:45]
We want recognition. We want to be famous. We want to be served. We want to be acknowledged. These are some of the very things we always wanted – besides material possessions. For example, many people, young and old are clamouring for recognition to be celebrities and the popularity of the America Idol contest speaks volume on this.
God has sent His Son, Jesus, to the world but not for popularity sake. He has become man to serve all mankind. God has given the greatest service that mankind desperately needed since the fall of Adam and that is to carry all their sins and nailed them onto the cross. Because of this we can be free from sin when we acknowledge Him, confess and repent of our sins.

And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. [John 11:1]
Regardless of your religion and your belief, we are all ‘praying creatures’. You may not be praying now because you don’t believe there is a God, or you may be at the prime of your career or have already achieved recognition in the society because of your vast amount of wealth you have and your pride tells you that you don’t need God to help you. However, that may change one day. Imagine you are inside a high rise building on 66th floor and suddenly you heard an announcement that there is a big earth-quake. You ran to the lifts, but alas, all the lifts are not working and you feel the shaking of the building. I can assure you that at that moment you will just pray that there is a God who will save you, a God can just stop the building shaking. Many years ago, I had a colleague who was not a Christian. This was what actually happening to him. He went to Peru for a business meeting. There was an earth-quake and he felt like the building he was in danger of collapsing. He told me that he had never pray so hard and so long in his life even though he didn’t believe in God. (Praise God! He is now a strong believer of Jesus and sharing Gospel and the love of God with others.) In our innermost, we always pray for help when we face calamities – whether you believe in God or not.
Let us not wait for that moment. Praying is a great privilege for all Christians. The Bible teaches us to pray unceasingly, pray always and in all circumstances. By the strictest Biblical definition, prayer is making petitions to God, expecting to receive what is asked. And when you pray, you pray only to the God of the Bible, Jesus, and not to others, not to the saints, not to your priests, not to your pastors, not to Moses, not to David, not to Mary, not to John - but to Jesus and Jesus alone.
Honest, sincere praying is not easy. Even Jesus’ disciples who were so close to Him had to ask Jesus to teach them to pray. It is an effort which must be acquired through sincere and constant practice. And there are conditions when you pray if you want Jesus to hear and answer your prayers: (a) you must have a righteous heart; (b) you must pray with the right attitude, and your purpose must not be a selfish one; (c) you must be humble, acknowledge your faults, and confess your sins to God, (d) you must pray in accordance with God’s will and purpose. His will and purpose for you are: to be closer to Him each day, to bring people, especially unsaved people, to know Him, to repent of your sins, to seek his holy counsel in all things you do, and to obey His commandments, and (e) you must have faith when you pray.
I encourage you to hear the Lord’s prayer (Matthew 6: 9-13) sang by Cliff Richard by clicking to the following website. It’s a wonderful piece of performance.

Lord’s Prayer [Matthew 6:9-13]
After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

[All Scripture references are from King James Version]
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. [Exodus 20:7]
One of the objectives of the Ten Commandments that God has given to us through Moses is to establish for us the rules which we must live by. By obeying these rules, we are drawn closer to God. In fact, to completely keep us out of trouble especially with the secular laws, all we need to do is to obey the Ten Commandments. As someone has put it, if everyone obeys the Ten Commandments, we don’t need policemen, and if all the world leaders live according to the Ten Commandments, we don’t need a military because there will be no war.
We show our love to God by honoring and obeying Him. One of the ways to do it is to obey His Third Commandment by not misusing or abusing His name. Every conscious attempt must be made that in our everyday speech, our prayers and in our lives we must respect and honour God’s name. Whenever we use God’s name, or speak to God or about Him, we should do so with the utmost respect and reverence. Besides our daily day speech, we must not make a careless oath or promise unless we have every intention to fulfill it; we must not speak abusively of things or people that God has created such as trivializing the word hell, bloody, sex or calling other people with unkind names; we must stop substituting words (euphemisms) for the name of God, such as, "Gee", "Golly" or “Gosh”; and we must stop complaining against God.
The use of God's name in a degrading or in any way disrespectful manner expresses an attitude of disdaining the relationship we are supposed to have with Him. Having a true relationship with God demands that we represent Him accurately, sincerely and respectfully.
