The Davidic Messianic Movements

Seven figures who led the messianic movements that can be considered “messianic” from 4BC to 100AD. These seven “messianic movements” are those of

(1) Judas son of Ezekias,

(2) Simon a slave of King Herod,

(3) Anthronges a shepherd,

(4) Jesus of Nazareth and John the Baptiser

(5) Menahem descendant of Judas the Galilean,

(6) John of Gischala, and

(7) Simon son of Giora.

Although there may have been many other movements of the day that were “messianic”, we have no evidence from our sources of those that would satisfy our criteria.

A Kingdom-of-God Movement

The three steps in this particular case may be summarized as follows. First, early Christianity grew up as a kingdom-of-God movement. Second, kingdom-of-God in Judaism had certain particular meanings. Third, since these certainly had not come to pass, we must inquire why the early Christians said, nonetheless, that the kingdom of God had in fact been brought to earth.

First, then, early Christianity thought of itself as a kingdom-Fog-God movement (Mark 1:14-15). Already by the time of Paul the phrase “kingdom of God” and its equivalents had become more or less a shorthand for the movement, its way of life, and its raison d’etre (Rom. 14:17; 1Cor. 4:20, 6:9-10, 15:50; Gal. 5:21; 1 Thess. 2:12). It is already woven into the structure of early Christian thinking. The way Paul uses it shows that it is common coinage within early Christianity and that it belongs within the Jewish world of which I have spoken. The early Christians told the story of the kingdom as their own story. They reordered their lives—in the case of former pagans, quite drastically—around the new symbolic universe in which the Jewish hope that there would be “no king but God” had come true through Jesus the Messiah. They engaged in a praxis that affirmed there was a different way of being human, a way that answered to the claims of this kingdom. This is the first step of this first stage in my argument.

The second step, then, is to consider what “kingdom of God” meant in Judaism (a large topic, of course, which we can here only summarize briefly and inadequately). Within Judaism the coming kingdom of God meant the end of Israel’s exile, the overthrow of a pagan empire and the exaltation of Israel, and the return of YHWH to Zion to judge and save. These are the motifs that emerge from that great kingdom-prophecy, Isaiah 40-55, and from numerous psalms and other parts of the Hebrew scriptures. And, as Josephus makes clear, in Jesus’ day the conviction that their “only Ruler and Master” was God was a particular mark of the revolutionaries (Ant. 18:23).

For a second-Temple Jew, then, the coming of the kingdom was not about a private existentialists or Gnostic experience but about public events. At its narrowest, it was about the liberation of Israel. At its broadest, it was about the coming of God’s justice and liberation for the whole cosmos. Thus, if you had said to a first-century Jew, “The kingdom of God is here,” and had explained yourself by speaking of a new spiritual experience, a new sense of forgiveness, or an exciting reordering of your private religious interiority, he or she might well have said that they were glad you had had this experience, but why did you refer to it as the kingdom of God? This, then, is the second step of this first stage in the argument.

The third step is to put these two together and to notice the contrast. It is clear that, whatever the early Christians said, the kingdom of God had not come in the way that first-century Jews had been imagining. Israel had not been liberated, the Temple was not rebuilt, and—looking wider in the cosmos—evil, injustice, pain, and death were still on the rampage. The question presses, then: Why did the early Christians say that the kingdom of God had come?

One answer obviously would be this: The early Christians changed the meaning of the phrase so radically so that it now referred not to a political state of affairs but to an internal or spiritual one. They had taken the apocalyptic meaning current in their world and had demythologized, dejudaized, spiritualized, or Hellenized it.

But this is simply untrue to early Christianity. The early Christians acted as if the Jewish-style kingdom of God was really present: they organized their life as if they really were the returned-from-exile people, the people of the new covenant. When they spoke of a new internal or “spiritual” reality, they used the language not of the kingdom of God, but of the new heart, the indwelling of the spirit, and so forth.

The historical question is therefore posed: What on earth (and I mean that on earth) would have caused them to act, speak, and think this way? Why, indeed, did they not continue the sort of kingdom-revolution they had imagined Jesus was going to lead? How do we explain the fact that early Christianity was neither a nationalist Jewish movement nor a private existential experience? How do we explain the fact that it is asserted, from within the Jewish worldview, that the eschaton had arrived, even thought it did not look like they had imagined it would? The early Christian answer was, of course, that Jesus had been raised from the dead. That was why they said that the kingdom had come and that the new age had dawned.

This brings us to the second stage in the argument.

[You are encouraged to freely share the message with others as the Lord leads but please note that nothing on the message must be used for profit!]

Today’s Scripture Reading [October 3, 2010]

In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. [1 John 4:9-10. KJV]

Since the invention of telephone, the Internet email and SMS just couple of decades ago, we all have experienced an evolution of electronic communication beyond our wildest dream. They are cheap, convenient and fast – literally at the speed of light! As in an old adage ‘cheap things are no good and good things are not cheap’, this old adage is particularly true when it comes to the modern-day of communication. The cost of sending an email or SMS is now so cheap as compared to other forms of communication like using postal or courier services that people don’t even bother to think about the cost anymore when sending SMSs or emails. As in all forms of communication, the very intent is to provide convenience and to bring people closer, and hopefully bind relationship for the better. Instead many of us are experiencing the exact opposite effect. Because they are so cheap and easily available and user-friendly, it is quite common to have people sending tons of SMSs, many of them are trivial messages, every day. We have heard that some of these messages had been so carelessly sent and known to have cause misunderstanding or even destroying relationship. For example, messages were known to have sent to wrong person wrecking havoc of relationship in married couples because cheating spouses sent love messages which were meant for their lovers but ended up in their spouses’ mobile-phones! In the corporate world, workers have to deal with the never-ending deluge of e-mails 24/7. The need to promptly reply emails has become one of the appraisal measures in the work place to evaluate employees’ work performance thus creating work-related stress for employees who are already facing other work challenges. Workers especially those white-collar professionals are glued to their iPhones, Blackberries, Smartphones and they simply turn ‘crazy’ when they have experienced breakdown of the services. It is quite certain that a breakdown in the service of a major telephone-carrier, even just for couple of hours, will be headline news. This truly reflects our current addiction for telco service to continuously providing uninterrupted service. Many of us have become, literarily-speaking, mobile-phone addicts!

Before telephone and other electronic communication devices were invented, the main source of communication was through hand-written letters which were couriered from door to door. The cost for couriering letters then was quite prohibitive and only those who were quite wealthy could afford sending letters to friends or relatives. With the invention of the postage stamp in 1840 by the British, it has revolutionized paper communication. Still then, the cost of postage stamp was not cheap and the efficiency of the postal system was anything but primitive. Due to the slow transportation it could take many days or even weeks for letters to arrive. Nonetheless, people were very excited each time they received a letter. The triviality of the content of letters was kept to a minimum because of the high cost of sending letters and also most people who wrote were serious about what they were writing. They would spare no effort on trivial matters. These old stamps, covers and letters are now collectors’ items and serious stamp collectors are willing to pay for thousands of dollar just for a stamp cover. For example, a first day cover of the world’s first stamp with a date-stamp of May 6, 1840 could fetch as much as 100,000 dollars.

But do you know which is the most expensive letter that had ever written? This letter was written none other than our Creator. It was written by Him to all the inhabitants in this earth, and the cost of this letter was paid by blood of God’s only begotten Son, Jesus. This is no ordinary letter. Rather, it was supernaturally written by God’s inspired 40 writers and it was divinely preserved and transmitted to us. This letter is complied into a book which known to people – believers and non-believers - as the Bible, God’s Holy Scripture.

What then is the content of this letter? The content of this letter is simple yet profound and has puzzled many people so much so that, sadly, many people just refuse to believe this simple letter of truth. This God's "love letter", the Bible is divinely written by God to us, telling us not only that He loves us, but showing us what He has done to demonstrate His love. It also tells us how we should live, because God knows what is best for us and He wants us to experience it. Never forget: The Bible is God's Word, given to us so we can know and follow Him. "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16).

Perhaps a good way to understand the complete content of this great letter, the Bible, is to first read the following summary which was summarized by an unknown author titled: MY CHILD. I would like to prayerfully hope that after you have read this summary letter, you go right now to read the entire content of letter, the Bible. From Genesis, the first chapter of the Bible to Revelation, the last chapter of the Bible, God is appealing to us to reciprocate His love. He is waiting for you to send Him the message: “Jesus I love you too. I want to be Your child!” The best news is that it is not going to cost you anything for you to send Him this message. Just simply and truthfully say those words to reciprocate God’s love and He is right here to listen to your message. He is waiting anxiously to receive this message from you! God is a very serious writer and He spared not effort in trivial message. Every word that He has communicated to us, every promise that He has promised us, every assurance that He has assured us will materialize! All you need to do is to trust this divinely inspired-letter written by God Himself, obey His commandments and His instructions, and He will deliver His promise to us - the promise of eternal life!

There are 2 versions of Jesus, the Jewish story where the King of Jews, Jesus, has died in AD29 and the Davidic messianic movement failed and the prophecies from the prophets in the OT did not come through!, or

the King of Jews, Jesus, died and become a God of the Hellensitic belieft and you live in the Hellenistic world of the Greco-Roman where there are Kingdom of heaven and hell and there are Gods, angels, Satans and Saints (Like tua pek kong, kuan yin, monkey god, tiger gods, etc).

People in his age wants a religious funeral just in case there is something up there like Jesus is waiting for him and give him a mansion and he will be with all the Hellenistic Gods, angels, Satans and many levels of heavens and hell to go to.

Over the last several months, we saw the passing of some great people - big property tycoon, one of our early founding fathers who was a great economic architect for Singapore and now the passing of Mrs. Lee. It brought to us - at to least me - a frequently asked question: What then after our death?

For truly born-again Christians, the death of our physical body is but the beginning of a new era for us - an era of perfect peace, perfect harmony under the reign of our Perfect God, Lord Jesus. We therefore need wake-up calls and for many of us, the death of a friend, a relative and someone whom we knew him or her - personally or because he or she has influenced the society, for the better or for worse, is a real wake-up call. Where are they now? That's be serious about this because there is life after death and Jesus has promised us abundant and eternal life beyond our present one. I pray that the following message will further emphasis the call that it's time to be serious, to wake-up and to walk closer with Jesus.

==========The Wake-Up Call=============

"And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed." Romans 13:11

Do you know what Napoleon said about China? "There lies a sleeping giant, and let him sleep, because if he awakens, he will shake the world."

I believe the devil says that about the church of the Lord Jesus Christ. And I believe the church is just that: a sleeping giant. We're asleep because we have been chloroformed by the spirit of this age.

We're bombarded on every side by all kinds of amusement. Do you know what amuse means? It's a combination of two words. Muse means to think, and the alpha prefix in front of it means "not to." We are a generation that is amusing ourselves into oblivion. And it's time to wake up!

Are you taking the Christian life seriously? If this were your last day on earth, how would you spend it? In amusement? Or in evangelism?

Jesus himself was dead. The King of Jews was dead in AD29, killed by rising the Davidic Messianic movement. The prophecies from the prophets in the scriptures did not come through (Daniel 490 years or seventy weeks) in AD28-29 and Jesus lan lan died for nothing.

The Pharisee Paul, of Hellenistic belief, made Jesus a God and as such Jesus is make a God like Chinese making Kuan Yin or Kuan Kong a God. Pharisee and Taoist aka same pattern.

There is no Kingdom of God as the prophecies did not come through for Jesus and God Yahweh did not establish HIS Kingdom of God in Israel and hence King of the Jews -Jesus was killed by the Roman for rising his rebel against the Roman Empire.

Paul only wrote 4 Epistles out of the 13 Epistles. Move on, Epistle of Roman was not written by Paul and as such Roman Letter was not God inspired letter but a fake written by one of the Pharisee Priests (Taoist).

Think of going to Paul's kingdom of heaven in the sky with many many mansion (John 14:3), then join the Pharisee Paul beleving in his Hellenistic religion.

Drifter, think you better stop your rational discussions here.

These are things some people do not like to hear and squirm at thinking about what you wrote. In fact, I suspect most believers are avoiding this thread.

But, bro... pls be careful. Don't you know that the Christians here can turn around, look at you, and called down a curse on you in the name of the LORD. Then two bears can come out of the woods or escape from the zoo to maul you and forty-two of the non-believers here?
Honestly, when i read your post. It was good lunch hour humour. Thank you

I don't think any non-believer here is doing anything malicious. I choose to believe we are all smart people, educated, refined and can make judgements from logical / illogical. But sadly, faith has cursed all these believers - not the other way around.

The use of the word "divine" - does not seem to do justice at all, in a logical sense. As i mentioned in another thread, proof of a book (what you call Old Testament) does not mean it is true. Many people believing it is true does not make it real.

I think many people are just afraid to come out, afraid to ask questions, afraid to be bullied. All this fear is caused by... ?

I only ask myself this...if heaven is such a great place...why wait? Go now...

I think the basic question we all have to ask ourselves is

Do we have a soul?
Does the human being have a soul?. Does the Soul then carry the body or is it the body that carries the soul?

If we believe that we have a soul then what happens to it after we die?

My own belief is that the soul is the one that carries the body because the body will die once the soul leaves it and it will then rot and decompose like all other living things that die.
What happens to us then is for your own religion to answer. In Buddhism for eg, the belief is that you can be returning or reincarnated depending on how you have been in this life.
Perhaps the rich man is a reincarnation of his prior good life and the poor person was bad before.Thats just scratching the surface of Buddhism i know and i may be wrong about that so pls forgive me and correct me thank you. What i learnt was that Buddha never portrayed himself as God nor did He exhort his followers to worship Him. How they started to ascribe divinity to Buddha is somewhat similar to how Christians ascribe divinity to Jesus Christ.
It may be somewhat similar in Hinduism as Buddha was originally from India so He may have had some leanings there.Again thats my own view so pls correct me if im wrong.

In Hinduism the original teaching was that there was ONE ultimate Creator and its the Truth or known as the Truth. How they started to interpret the scriptures in various manner and started with the various Gods is for the Ramayana historians to deal with.

Ive learnt much about Christianity too.
Im still earning about how the Nicene Creed in 325 A.D was convened and then the priests and the religious leaders all voted for the four gospels to be the official canon of Christianity and they voted something like 300 to 3 to worship Christ as God.

Again ,like Buddhism i learnt from the Bible that there are many verses that allude to the fact that Jesus himself never proclaimed to be God nor did He exhort his followers to worship Him.

I also learnt that there are many early Christians like the Ebionites and Bassilidians who also never worshipped Christ but followed His teachings and His examples.Even today there is a Christian denomination that is called Unitarian Universalist that also does not subscribe to the divinity of Christ.

Till next time ...Peace
