The key positive I took away from the Bukit Batok BE that will significantly help improve the opposition's fight in the next GE. Thanks to Dr Chee and Dr Tambayh, PAP have now publicly informed Sinkies that the upgrading carrots are "revenue neutral", in other words the opposition parties can also provide the same publicly funded upgrading and NRPs as the PAP. This will reduce the unfair disadvantage in WP and SDP's election campaigns against PAP.
Another positive thanks to Sylvia Lim in parliament recently, PAP have publicly disallowed themselves from using the PA and RCs for PAP's political campaigning as seen in the BB by-election. This will help reduce some unfair disadvantage for WP and SDP in the next GE.
With the unfair disadvantages reduced in this areas, WP and SDP now needs to improve their municipal and grassroots campaign messages to the electorate to win over more apathetic voters and swing voters in the next GE. But still much more needs to be done to level the playing field, WP and SDP needs to continue voicing out PAP's dirty politics and pork barrel politics.
One more positive of the Bukit Batok BE results is that Dr Chee and SDP are making inroads into the hearts and minds of heartland voters. Previously it was thought that SDP appeals more to the middle class private housing dwellers, which was probably why Dr Chee and Dr Tambayh contested in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC where 45% of residents live in private housing. .
But unlike PAP, SDP is made up mainly of heartlanders living in HDB flats. SDP's focus has always been on the poor and elderly, and calling for more public spending on medical and social services for heartlanders. SDP's campaign has been very much for the heartlanders, so it shouldn't be surprising that it's getting more appealing to heartlanders.
SDP is on the right track with their bread and butter and municipal centric campaign, and their tireless campaign walking the entire Bukit Batok and reaching out to every resident face to face. Hope SDP continues doing all this for the next election.
