50 years on... Life is not exactly a bed of roses for Singapore’s first Olympic medallist

SINGAPORE — His silver medal victory at the Rome Olympics is etched on many Singaporeans’ minds.

On September 8, 1960, weightlifter Tan Howe Liang hoisted a total of 380kg in the lightweight category (under 67.5kg) to earn the Republic’s first Olympic medal.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Tan’s achievements at the Palazetto Dello Sport Hall but life hasn’t been smooth—sailing for the 77—year—old.

While he declined to be interviewed for this story, Channel NewsAsia has learnt that the sports veteran is financially strapped after his 61—year—old wife was diagnosed with breast cancer.

According to sources, the former weightlifter and his three children have spent an estimated $100,000 on Mrs Tan’s surgery and follow—up treatments.

Tan Howe Liang receives help from mystery donor

SINGAPORE'S first-ever Olympic medallist Tan Howe Liang has received an undisclosed sum of money from a mystery donor to help him out with medical expenses for his wife's cancer treatment.

The donation was made via the Singapore National Olympic Council and would aid the former national weightlifter and his family, who have spent as much as $100,000 on medical fees, Channel News Asia (CNA) said on Saturday.

News of his wife's condition was first reported in December last year by Mediacorp, who said that the 66-year-old had undergone surgery and treatment for breast cancer.

The 77-year-old Mr Tan said in an interview that he was grateful to the anonymous donor who had stepped forward, and that his wife's cancer was now under control.

Though the amount he received was not revealed, the Singapore National Olympic Council said in the CNA story that it was "sufficient to meet his needs."

With regards to his wife's recurring medical expenses for the next three to five years, Mr Tan told Shin Min Daily that he would be able to cope with help from his children and siblings, together with his own salary.

The Chinese evening paper understands that Mr Tan is currently working at the Singapore Sports Council as a gym supervisor, with a monthly income of around $1,000. On top of that, he also receives $390 a month for his past contributions to Singapore's Olympic efforts.

Mr Tan won the silver medal in the weightlifting event at the 1960 Olympics in Rome.

Look at how they treated the great Tan Howe Liang.. Its a disgrace that at his age he's still working as gym supervisor and being paid a measly pay of less than 1.5K per month... For Fark's sake, this man won us an Olympic medal and yet they treated him shabbily.. Look at those Table Tennis and badminton imports from China... They were treated like Queens by those Scums In White and the Shit Times.. Fuckin Double Standards.. True blue Sinkie Heroes like Mr Tan and Fandi Ahmad are treated like unwanted rubbish...

Fandi: SSA owes me 4 months' salary

A day after announcing his sensational move to become Johor FA's technical adviser, local football legend Fandi Ahmad claims he is owed around four months' salary by his former employer Sembawang Soccer Academy (SSA).

Confirming that he also had not received CPF contributions over the same period, the 49-year-old (left) told The New Paper: "I've sent them a letter to pay me what I'm owed by the end of the week."

Fandi's monthly salary is believed to be $25,000, with a housing allowance of $5,000.

It is understood that after the SSA had repeatedly defaulted on the payment of his salary, Fandi, who signed a five-year contract as SSA's director of football development, served notice to leave the academy on Jan 15, although he extended it by four days later on.

Sources also tell TNP that up to 16 ITE footballers, who are allegedly also owed allowances by the SSA, subsequently followed Fandi to be part of his H-Two-O Dream Team.

Fandi's revelation is another low point for the beleaguered SSA, which was embroiled in a contractual dispute with its Italian partner, Genova International School of Soccer (GISS).

Breach of contact

Last October, GISS director Morris Pagniello had said that the SSA failed to make payment for a training camp in Italy.

In its defence, SSA director Ferdinand Robert had claimed that the GISS had breached the contract in the first place, according to an interview with The Straits Times.

Yesterday, TNP revealed Fandi's new three-year deal to be Johor FA's new technical adviser, which will commence on Thursday.

Since retiring as a footballer and becoming a backroom staff, the national icon has led SAFFC to the S-League title in 2000 and 2002 as coach.

As Raddy Avramovic's assistant, Fandi helped the national team lift the Tiger Cup in 2005, before he took on a more lucrative offer with Indonesian club Pelita Jaya.

There, his accomplishments include masterminding their promotion from the second division, largely banking on a youth policy, before leaving the club in March 2010.

Wow....is he worth so much? Did he even earn so much when he was a player?! lol

In the 80s he was already being paid $10k per month playing for Indonsian club.
In the 90s he was paid at least double that playing for malaysia clubs.
Even when he came back to singapore later for 'retirement' his basic pay was 20K (believe this was public knowledge as his salary was an exception).
these are basic salaries not counting his endorsements.....factor in inflation he was definitely paid this amount during his time as a player (though still meagre compare to real pro footballers).
