Singapore is a different kettle of fish altogether. Dynamic leadership is what makes the difference. There is nothing else to fall back upon.... no oil, no dairy, no timber, no minerals. All Singapore has is people.

That may have been a factor in the good old days but it is hardly important anymore. World trade dances to a different tune in the 21st century eg a huge volume goes by air so a deep harbor means very little.

I really don't know how much of a difference it would make by the time it becomes a reality. I'm sure that if it did happen there would be an impact but it seems that it is far more likely that the melting of the polar ice caps is a bigger threat to Singapore's sea trade.
